  1. When doing a shorten segment or a divide function on a recording, is there any way to jump ahead several minutes besides using the FF speeds. I know you can FF up to 100x, but is there any way to jump ahead while you're editing like you can when you're watching a recording and not editing (using the time slip feature).

  2. I haven't found a way to jump ahead during editing other than using the CM Skip button. You can fast forward a minute at a time with each click. I've been adding a few markers on long programs before I start editing--just to get me near or at a start point.

  3. Can you jump to the marker points while in "Shorten Segment" mode?

I routinely use the above CM Skip method for editing (3-4 clicks usually gets you through most commercials w/o much rewinding/fast forwarding). I don't mind waiting on the 100X FF for the bulk of the show, but I would prefer to not make my recorder "work" while it's scanning if I could jump ahead using something similar to time slip.

I wish you could "disk defrag" the HD, too. I get lots of little space on the HD that is used in later recordings because of edited commercials (causing the HD to jump/seek around more). I know you can format the hard drive, but I have too much on it that I don't want to lose to consider doing that right now.

  4. I have had my E100H for several days and this point most of questions relate to editing out commercials. Some of the same question as posted above occured to me too - so here goes:

    1) Is is possible to use Time Shift to jump foward/back in user specified increments when in the divide program or shorten segment windows?

2)Alternatively is there a quick way to zip to the end of program in the shorten segment windows? ie faster than using the FF button.

3)Is it possible to mark spots in a movie while in FF?

4)Is it possible to Skip forward to marks from within divide program or shorten segment windows?

5)Invariably I want to delete the first and last couple of minutes from programs. (I set extra time in the schedule due to off schedule broadcast times.) In shorten segment can you just use the END option and the utility assumes START to be program time 00:00 instead of having to pause and rewind back to the start to assign START at 00:00 manually. - and the reverse for lopping the end of the program. ie selecting START then NEXT places END at the END of segment. Be good and seems logical to me if this works but it does not seem to for me.

Perhaps someone who has had their unit for a while has got commercial zapping down to an art can share with us how you do it in the most time efficient manner.

  5. I've had my E-100 since September of 2003 and have recorded ALOT of broadcast TV. See my post above for things I would like to do but haven't figured a way out.

    A few other answers:
    1) Haven't figured a way to use Time Shift in Shorten Segment (SS) mode yet.

    2) Still looking myself

    3) & 4) I haven't been able to jump to a mark while in Shorten Segment mode.

    5) You still have to reverse to the beginning (pause mark) and hit start to edit from the very beginning. Start only begins the beginning of an edit, while end only determines the end of an edit.

I have noticed that you can use frame advance (or the left/right arrows) to get your edit exactly on the last frame you want if you are paused in SS mode (the FF/Reverse in pause also does it for you to avoid keep [ressing the button). Also, I have noticed that my E-100 "jumps" back slightly on the frame you select to begin your edit (ie, when you hit Start). If I select the first frame of the first commercial to begin my edit (instead of the last black frame before the commercial), it will actually begin the edit on the last black frame. This is helpful for when there is almost no transition (or none) between show and commercial (or if you like longer pauses at your "breaks"). On the HD, you can see this frame if you FF or Reverse (not regular play), but it has not shown up on any dub/redub I have done.

  6. Thanks houtx67. My E-100H is currently grinding away all day long converting all my VHS videos. I guess this is a common way for newbies like me to cut our teeth. Seems like a good way to learn the beast..

BTW having read much criticism about the Panasonic manual I did not find it that bad actually. Improved it a fair bit by going through and colour coding the various sections headers with a hightlighter. RED for record, Green playback and so on. Also colour coded all the little [DVD-R] [RAM] [HDD] icons. Shame it not available in colour.
