  1. I have a Sony IP1 camera and want to get a new MiniDv cam and am looking at maybe the PC330 or TRV33.

I noticed that when capturing from my IP1 with micro mv tapes I can get approx 4 hrs onto 34gb of hdd space but only 2 - 2 1/2 hrs from the mini dv depending on what capture option I use.

If i have an hour of dv footage on the camcorder will it be better quailty only having to reduce down a smaller size from the IP1 rather than reducing by a larger amount from the bigger files captured from the Mini dv?

I'm a little confused here and may-be have not made it too clear.

  2. From my understanding MicroMV is Sony MPEG2 format. MPEG2 is more compressed than DV.
You would get better quality by captureing DV and compressing to MPEG2 later with your preferred settings, than letting the IP1 camera do it for you on the fly.
The better your source quality, the better your final output.
Of course this is the compromise for an extremely small camera.

  3. I think the MicroMV tapes have some kind of chip in them to easily reference the time scale. Ive heard that the MicroMV cams will soon fade away becuase there popularity isn't nearly what MiniDV is. But this could be just BS.

Check the Glossary on this site.
