When you open it in QT press Apple+J. On the Left dropdown menu choose Video Track, on the Right dropdown menu choose Format. What Data Format does it say it is?

what error do you get when trying to play it in quicktime

a divx wont play in quicktime unless you have the proper codex installed, and even still you need to "doctor" it

if it has an audio source other than mp2 then im pretty sure it wont work either

hence the beauty of VLC as you pointed out. it plays it

is there some despriate rason you want it to open in quicktime
