Hiya all! I'm sure this has been asked and answered somewhere, if so, apologies, and can u please direct me to the thread? If not, on we go...
My system: 1.6 Pentium 4, 512RAM, new Plextor 708A 8x burner (with most recent firmware). Ripping w/DVDShrink(latest version), burning w/Nero 6. Old burner was Memorex 4x. Using memorex 4x DVD +R discs.
When burning with Plextor 708A, at 8x, buring goes smooth as silk...9 mins or so. But when I watch the dvd (in stand alone player (Mintek, which will play anything, God bless it!), after about an hour or so, the movie pixelates a bit, then more and more, sometimes freezing totally. When I burn at 4x with the Plextor, movie watching goes fine (so far!).
I've read a buncha stuff, possibly media related (plextor drive doesnt like memorex), possibly stand alone player related (burning speed was too fast for stand alone player to play?)...has anyone else had this same problem? If so, can we say with any kind of certainty what the issue is? Is there a fix/workaround for it? Any ideas/help would be great.
Thanx!

Ok, I'll give that a whirl (6x), but does the movie play in the stand alone ok after burning it?
Thanx!

that could be the problem, burning at 8X on 4X discs is probably not a good idea

I have the same Plextor drive. Never had a problem with 8x burned discs playing properly. I use strictly TY and Ricoh made dvd+r's.

Yup ... some disks just cannot handle high speed burns. If the disk is being pushed past it's intended burn stategy, the dye is ruined, producing a coaster.
This is the drawback of hacked firmware, although some dyes will hold up well (such as Riteks). -
I have the 708a and have had a couple of the same problems. I now have 1.06 firmware.
I always have problems with 4x discs burned at 8x, they play back fine in the drive, but skip in all of may stand alone dvd players. I just burn everything at 4x now, until better 8x media becomes more common.
How do you burn at 6x? I can only burn at 2x 4x 8x? Thats all my nero recognizes
