I am about to update my PC to a faster one for video processing (encoding).
What are the speed difference between a Pentium 4 and Atlhon CPU.
For example: Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz and Atlhon 2800.
everything else being equal (DDR memory, same bus speed, etc..)

be hard to "everything else being equal (DDR memory, same bus speed, etc..)"
because they use different chip sets and with the intel you can have 800fsb and dual channel memory ...
of course a whole new standard is comming out this summer which means - who knows .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Anybody using the 64 bit Athlon? That's the one I'm holding out for. Maybe by the end of the year, the price will be reasonable.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
Me? I'd go Intel. A P4 HyperThreader with Dual-Channel RAM.
Smurf swears by his RDRAM machine, but I think those are getting very rare now. Still haven't decided myself on that one, yet. -
It would really depend on the exact programs you are using for a single CPU setup.
More than likely HT will win for the P4 side for a single CPU.
If you go duals, go A64. -
AFAIK Opterons are the only 64-bit chips that support multi-processor systems, the Athlon 64s do not. Besides, the latest Xeons will smoke the 64-bit procs on the market. If you really want to spend the money on dual CPUs wait for Asus to release the PCH-DL and throw two 3.2 GHz Xeon MPs on it. Apparently the Intel 875 chipset absolutely flies.

An Athlon XP 2800 will destroy a Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz for half the price....

I'm waiting for the PCH-DL too. I'm selling my current core system off for $1000US to pay for at least one CPU and the motherboard. Word on the street says that the PCH-DL will come in around $300-350 when released. I have no rumors as to when it will be out though. The only reason I'm waiting for that one and not getting the current PC-DL is because the new one supports faster CPUs and has PCI-X. I need at least two accessable 64-bit PCI slots with the new board, and part of the reason I'm getting rid of the rock-solid 2460.
However there is a LOT of discussion about the overclocking abilities of the Asus baords running the 875 chipset. People with the new cores (Northwood or Prestonia?) are bumping their Xeons over 4 GHz on conventional cooling. Some think using phase-change cooling can get each CPU to near 5 GHz of clock though I don't know how practical that would really be. Video encoding would be pretty quick with two of those though, don't you think?
Oh, and the Tyan's for sale *nudge, nudge* -
You guys should know, cache doesnt help usually in video encoding.
The new Xeons with 4mb cache are to help with the bottlenecked FSB in SMP.
Or you could get a real solution to that bottlenecked FSB. -

I had posted a thread last year seeking advice for a computer I'd be purchasing soon. I delayed that purchase; I have a buddy who works at the Intel plant in Rio Rancho, NM and he suggested it would be worth my wait to hold-off until mid 2nd Quarter 2004. Something about a new Xeon processor that would be worth my dollars.
Hell if I know why. Anything exciting you've heard about in the Xeon world lately. Maybe I missed something on Page 2... -
I'm only selling the core part of my system, so not the whole deal. It's only going to be the mobo, supported CPUs (the 1900s are going back in), 1GB of ECC reg RAM (the Mushkin is going into my new system), case, 550w PSU, USB 2.0 card, NIC, and the aftermarket cooling solutions. No hard drives, no video card, no sound card. This leaves it open to be either a server or a workstation. I'd throw in an old GeForce2 for free if someone was going to use it for a server. The MP2400s are actually mobile Athlon 2500s and those are already sold to a friend as soon as I find a buyer for the rest of it. I wish I could keep it, it's a solid machine, but I just don't have room for it here
I'm thinking the new Xeons your friend is referring to are the latest gen MPs. They're going to be along the lines of the P4 Extreme with a 2MB L2 cache. Those things are just insane, and having two of them is doubly insane. If by "worth your money" he means worth lots of your money then yes. I'm sure those suckers will run a little over a grand each when they come out. Why not save up and get an Itanium
