  1. I have been trying for about two months now to convert .avi files to mpgs to burn on to dvd's. No matter which guide I follow or what settings I change, I always get some sort of error or the audio is out of synch or there bad frames, even though I have deleted them with Vdub.

So, I was thinking about something. I have done some research and havent found anything. Are there any standalone DVD players that have .avi support? I would think there are, but they are most likely pretty costly.

    Any info for me?

Click on "DVD Players" on left hand side of this page, check off "Divx/Xvid/MPEG-4" then click "Search".

  3. Erm .. why didnt I think of that? *grrrr*

I did a search and got many matches. My question now is are any of those any good? Out of the 119 matches, I only recognized a couple of brand names and about 7 players.

Any recommendations of what to get and what to stay away from?

  4. Why don't you just save your money and capture to MPEG-2 using a PCI card (Hauppauge) or standalone device (ADS Instand DVD) instead?

  5. Or an ATI AIW?

Oh dear God, you don't want one of them things! If you want to make a habit of converting AVI to MPEG then get an ADVC 55 (or similar).

All useless suggestions since he's not capturing, he's downloading.

People use VBR audio to make re-encoding difficult on purpose. They don't want you to re-do 'their' work.

  8. Then he should get a dual head video card and a standalone DVD recorder and play the DivX's (or whatever) out of the PC and record directly onto the DVD recorder. This will give good quality transfers and will keep sound in sync.

Try this: you can burn with Nero with AVI as input file and burn it as MPEG.

I have not done this b4, I remember seeing a thread as such.

Ok, fair enough. But that isnt my only problem. For example, I clean up all the bad frames. Extract the audio. Everything is fine. I convert them with TMPGenc. No problem. Then I try to burn them with TMPG Author, and I get 3 or 4 error messages about resolution size not matching the resolution that I chose. How can it not match what I chose if I chose it? I am following the guides exactly.

On another note, let's not assume I am downloading. I suppose what I am doing isn't much better, but none of what I am doing came from the internet.

Get an APEX there about the cheapest you can buy and they'll play almost nething you feed into them and it doesn't have to be burned into the standard compliant form just straight burn it to a cd and it will come up with a folder menu in fact you can seperate the stuff your burning into folders and browse through them like windows it supports multiple formats per cd i/e mp3 music and movies on the same cd I loved mine but, unfortunately I returned it to walmart to uprgrade to a more expensive brand (stupid) I traded the apex in for an emerson got a lot of hell because it was a year and a half old with no box or receipt got it home and realized hey this thing won't even play a vcd (I only paid 43$ for the apex the emerson was 63 and I had to pay the difference*also the apex being my first experience with dvd players I didn't realize that all dvd players weren't like that ie it will play nething) but seriously go for the apex and tell me how it suits you if you do YAY no more file conversions!!!

Not true any more..the previous poster had it more correct APEX is an old choice...
Please remember APEX doesn't support AVI and YANKED VCD support from their machines!

I'd add the Lite-ON that plays AVI

So does ne1 know what apex does play exactly now I'd like to by another. I used to put bunches of porn clips on cd's and watch them with the apex and it seemed like it would almost always play most of them. But if the newer ones don't play nearly as much I'll just get something else. Also does ne1 know of a player that will play dvd's and supports a wide range of avis mpegs and other media formats running around 50-75$?
