that message means that the movie you are watching is an illegal copy, most likely a screener. you are supposed to call that number so the company knows that someone leaked out that video and is selling it as a normal copy. you wont get busted for watching one of these, but u might get busted for downloading them
-
the best dvd screener was lotr ttt, every ten minutes or so "for your consideration" would appear on the screen for a few seconds and then go away.. anamorphic widescreen w/ dd 5.1.. oh man it was sweet..
the worst are the ones that go black and white and then have huge scrolling letters. well the ones that say "property of blah blah" throughout the movie are pretty bad too..
anyhoo, back to the point. i'm sure you could get busted, but you're not in a positioin to. its mainly the people who sell them who are gonna get in trouble. -

One of my friends had a downloaded Kill Bill Screener. Every 10 minutes it would do a "countdown" with that vintage look from early movies. I hated it - I don't know if it was the quality or the movie itself, but I just didn't like it.
It seems the picture quality of a movie im watching affects how much I end up liking it, somehow. -

oh yeah and what if i were to trash all my dvdr`s and the dvdscreeners then i would have to be in the clear , cuz no warning as all. so i could plead the 5th or habus copus or ...well you get the picture -
You're more likely to get a C&D. It's cheaper.

screeners aren't illegal - video distributors send those out to video store owners all the time.
I've been sent many over the years...but usually don't have much interest in the stuff they send.
There was only one time I won an auction on ebay and found out it was a screener...though it was an older movie an I wasn't gonna make a big deal about it. The movie wasn't worth keeping anyway. -
You're going to get busted and rot in jail you pirate......hehehehe jk. But no need to get hasty at the other guys. They are family here and we all do this in every thread. Guess the new guy just has to learn.

The reality is that nobody gets in legal trouble for downloading music and movies illegally. What can get them in trouble is when they begin sharing it with others (like the people targetted by the RIAA lawsuits are). I'm not condoning downloading pirated copies of music and movies, I'm simply stating reality.

Sure, dvdxcopy recently turned in a person caught pirating. They also offer a $10,000 reward for anyone turning someone in. :
"321 first heard of the Illinois man’s alleged activities in court
papers related to Paramount Pictures Corporation and Twentieth Century
Fox Film Corporation v. 321 Studios, a lawsuit filed in the Southern
District Court of New York on November 14, 2003. The company took
action the same day by remotely de-activating the man’s copy of
DVDXCOPY XPRESS."
"A $ 10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction
of any person using 321’s software to pirate movies.
“Although it was a shock to learn that one of our customers was
arrested for piracy, it is comforting to know that our piracy
prevention measures worked exactly as they were intended,” said Rob
Semaan, CEO of 321 Studios. “The video warning found at the beginning
of the copies made by this alleged infringer not only served as notice
to his customers that the DVDs they were purchasing were not original
DVDs, but also enabled the police to identify any copies he had made
using our software. In addition, our software activation requirement
and watermark technology allowed us to remotely disable his software
and prevent any further abuse.”
