  1. I have an All in wonder 128 and i have hooked up a digital telivision box (UK itv digital) with an s-video but the quality was really bad! i was using a 5 metre s-video

    does the length of the s-video deteriate the picture or is it the limit of the AIW

    i then hooked up same but going through the regular arial point... quality has improved some but is hardly what i would expects (red lines across screen, little fuzzy)

    again i have a long coaxial connection

    is the AIW just a little bit crap at video in or is it my leads and such

  2. A 5 meter S cable should not be a problem. I capture from a satelite receiver with a 25' S cable to the AIW 128 pro and the signal looks great. You could have a bad S cable.

  4. If this comment is stated a year ago, then I would say you are doing it wrong. However, the ATI AIW128 PRO series cards are not what they used to be. Yes, the quality on it is degrading comparing with the original AIW128 16Mb and 32Mb cards from the late 1999 to early 2000. Rage128 chipset and 6292 driver are much better capture hardware. ATI has switched over to Rage Enhanced Theater chipset on the card for encode/decode capture driver, and Rage128Pro chipset for video driver. The Rage128Pro video chipset now a day will not allow you to install 6292 video driver, so you have to use the most current driver in order for it to install correctly. However, doing so you have lost the ability to use VFW driver for third party capture softwares.

    I have a collection of 16Mb 2xAGP with Bt8x8 encode/decode capture chipset + Rage128(not pro), 32Mb 2xAGP with Rage Enhanced Theater encode/decode capture chipset + Rage128(not pro), 32Mb 4xAGP Rage128 PRO, and of course radeon. The card I end up using the most is the 16Mb 2xAGP. I guess old technology still provides better quality, until the new technology works out its issues.

    first off, the 6292 drivers DO work on the rage 128 Pro. they are, in fact, optimized for it. the differences between the rage128 and rage128pro chipsets occur mostly in how much data they can pass through the PCI vs AGP bus, and this has very very little to do with video quality. the bt878 and Rage Theater chips are fundamentally different though. the bt878 setup was better for VCD-bitrate captures. However, the RageTheater surpasses it for higher bitrate stuff. from the ones i've tested out, the best setup for SVCD (ignoring 3D perfomance) seems to be the Rage128 Pro w/ Rage Theater under either VFW/win9x 4.12.6292 drivers, or under WDM/win2k with 5.13.1.192, both using MMC 7.1. The PCI rage128 bt878 card is better with 4.12.6292 under win9x with MMC 6.3 (AVI) or 7.1 (MPEG-1) for VCD capture.

    but when you can get far better quality in near-realtime with SVCD / Rage Theater, why not?

  6. If you want to capture VFW with the WDM capture driver you can install the WDM -> VFW wrapper. You can find referance several download sites here is one:

  7. Hmm... thanks for the help although i am not sure whether what i want can or can't be done... all i want it an easy to use video in that is good quality and will work with various capture programs... any clues

    how do u install 6292 on an ATI AIW128 PRO 32Mb 4xAGP card? I have tried and tried and it kept on telling me that the chipset is not a valid RagePro chip. Did you purchased this card recently? or did you get it around 1999-2000 time frame? ATI has Rage128 and Rage128 pro product around 1999-2000 time frame and both of the Rage128 and Rage128 Pro are AGP driven and not divided into AGP and PCI like today. The Rage128 product is divided into 2 category like 16Mb and 32Mb and both are 2xAGP with rage128 chipset only. The 16Mb came with bt8x8 encode/decode chip and the 32Mb came with the new rage enhanced theater chip. While the rage128 pro products are 4x AGP driven. the rage128 pro at that time only have 32Mb available.

    As for SVCD capture with rage enhanced theater, the detail quality on the rage enhanced chipset is indeed sharper; However, you are now looking at video macro block noise gallore. The rage enhanced theater chipset seems to enhanced the pixel edge, hence the macro block noise is an issue. You can go and set the motion estimation setting up to 20 (max) and the macro block noise went away a little, but it is still there in high contrast area ( especially around dark area ).

    Needless to say, I am now using the rage128 pro strictly as a tv out for my mpeg4 player. The radeon is used as game playing. I currently am using 4 Rage128 16Mb 2xAGP as vid capture. One for VHS transfer, one for Cable, and two for sat.
