avi to dvd not fitting on disc

I am having a problem trying to change avi to dvd then burning on a disc, it won,t fit. I use two programes CUCUSOFT OR MAIN CONCEPT, these say it changes from avi to dvd but when I come to burn to disc using Nero the file is far too big and won't fit on. I am new to dvd writing and wonder have I got the general idea or am I totally off key. All answers in basic english if you please.

Author your dvd using your authoring software as normal then instead of burning using nero run it through DVDShrink.

adjust the bitrate so it will fit. and be sure so nerovision express doesn't reencode the video, author and burn with a good tool like tmpgenc dvd author.
