I created a SVCD at a bitrate of 2745 and tried playing it on my Aiwa DV-177 DVD player (doesn't support SVCDs). It didn't play but it did show the track length on the DVD player. How does it know the track length if it can't read SVCDs???

SVCD format is an extension to VCD's. It's possibly for the player to recognize the format as VCD and display some information without being directly compatible.
