I know I haven't been part of this community long, but I find that I get some pretty good answers when I do have questions...here's my dilema of the month...
I live with my roommate and my girlfriend (Odd I know). My roommate is a friend. Anyway, its a 2 bedroom apartment, and we share the kitchen and so on. Anyway, when it comes to bills I told him that he would pay HALF. The reason for this is...he's a lazy ass. He doesn't have to go shopping, do any of the cleaning or pay for anything other than the food he wants to eat. My girl and I take care of things like toilet paper and so on...all the little things we take care of. In almost a year, he has never taking out the garbage, or vaccumed...but thats OK...that was part of the whole deal.
NOW, its winter, and our bills were pretty high, more than double the average. Anyway, he now thinks that he shouldn't have to pay his share BECAUSE, he had spent a couple nights a week back at his parents place and figures he's not the one using the utilities. I told him, that its his responsibility as a tenant and roommate to make the payments regardless of whether he had been crashing at his parents or not.
Am I in the wrong for asking him to pay up!?

1. You're right. He's in for half. Since you can't meter what each of you is using in terms of utilities, he's in for half.
2. Get a new roommate. This one sounds shitty.
3. If he doesn't start paying up, change the locks until you get the money.
4. Be careful; some people are psycho. -
Make up a classifed ad on your computer and leave it in an obvious spot where he willl find it. Tell him that his room is going to be advertised as available unless he pays his share.

I think you know the answer to this, but how you got him to agree to half when it should only be a third beats me.
Are we talking all bills here, lighting, heating and so on?

Regardless of how lazy this 'friend' is, 50% of bills is unbalanced and I don't care what anyone says...
....if there's three of you in their you should all pay an equal amount and do an equal amount of house-chores.
Paying a little more (ie. 50%) to sit around and do **** all is neither doing the friendship any good nor is it justified reward for the other two doing all the chores.
My advice would be to give the lazy bastard his notice and have someone move in who will pay his/her third and do a third of the housework.
Wanker filter back on.

As am I sure you can see...I live in Japan. Japanese males pretty much rely on their mothers until they get married. Then their wives do all the housework. Anyway, he was a friend before being a roommate. So, I knew he wouldn't been keen on cleaning, laundry, washing the bath or giong shopping for toilet paper. So instead of trying to figure out ALL the bills (electricity, water, gas, daily products like toothpaste) and giving chores to him, I just told him to pay for half of the bills, and the rest would be taking care of. He seemed to think it was a good deal, as did I. I don't really trust someone who has never done laundry to clean my spider-man underwear!!

and by paying for half of the bills, I just meant electricity, gas and water.

I hate freeloaders. I REALLY hate freeloaders. I deal with them in construction ALL THE TIME! I have decided that the only people on a construction project that aren't freeloaders are the surveyors. Everybody else is always looking for a free ride, even the architects.
As for your roommate, I'd kick his ass right out the door. -
Okay, then like I say you know the answer
He has far too many concessions and is now being unreasonable.
Be polite, be confident and be civil when you tell him...
..."it's not working, either you pay your half as you agreed (it's your call where you spend the night) or you look for somewhere else to live
Don't let it drag on to the next month, do it now
Post back how you get on...
....if you live through it, that is

Well, he was suppose to come home today (His pay day) to give me the money he owes (Since I already paid the bills and need my share of the money to pay for other things.) Anyway, he's not home this evening, he's chosen to spend another evening at his parents place. Anyway, I will post again once I get things sorted. Thanks for the input...

I think it's the most expensive place in the world to rent/buy housing.
I KNOW it's the most expensive country in the world to visit. I've had the pleasure of dealing with expense reports in my previous careers.

THEN you pay your damage deposit, which is ones months rent...and one months rent can be anywhere from 500 to 1000 dollars, depending on how close you are to the train station, and how far you are from the city center.
I live in a 2 room apartment, that is about the size of a one room in any other country. The living room and kitchen are one room. I pay 70,000 yen, which is about 700 dollars...my roommate pays 600 dollars.
For me to take the subway for 2 minutes, just a couple stations down, it costs about 3 dollars.SmileSmile

I came here when I was 19 to teach English. Last July, with a wealthy businessman, I opened my own school. Things are slow to start, but picking up great. Teaching English here is a breeze if anyone is thinking of coming down...
