Pros:-RW has better DVD player compatibility and you are able to test before burning.
Cons:most writers can't burn faster than 2x(some 4x) and you must format before burning.

Pros:+RW has better defect management,faster writing(2.4-4x) and you don't have to format before burning.
Cons:can't test before burning.

For DVDR it depends on DVD player compatiblity and other factors,use what works best for you.

When using +RW for packet writing to save data like a floppy disc, then +RW has to be formatted, this will be done in the background if you are not writing to the disc, or if you do not give it chance to background format, it will format as it goes, e.g. write a bit, format a bit, write a bit, slowing the write down initially. DVD-RW doesn't need to be full formatted at all for packet-writing, which is an advantage over +RW as you can write straight away to a new disc without the write a bit, format a bit, write a bit, slowing things down.

DVD+RW still have time to do background formatting and wont be any slower than DVD-RW.
And once its formatted its two times faster.
