Most DVD discs have copy protection.

There are actually two types of analog copy protection:

1.) Macrovision
2.) CGMS/A

Most DVD discs seem to have both or will have neither. Not ALL DVD discs have copy protection but most seem to have it.

A stand alone DVD recorder will NOT allow you to copy from a source that has Macrovision and/or CGMS/A

If you really want to copy a DVD this way and will be doing more than just a few then you should invest in a DVD player that has BOTH forms of copy protection removed.

Such players are far and few between though.

Most will only disable Macrovision but not CGMS/A which does you no good. You need one that disables both. Usually if the DVD player is advertised as VCR friendly it only disables Macrovision. If it disables both then it usually will say DVD recorder friendly.

Again finding such a DVD player can be a trick.

Last time I took a look they had some Panasonic models that fit the bill.

P.S.
I just took a very quick look and the cheapest one I could find was a Pioneer region 2 model that was 499 Euros so you might have to look around a bit harder.
