  1. I"ve got a pretty big file with ac3 audio and xvid video. I'd like to pull the ac3 out and convert to something less "spacy", like mp3 or ogg. How do I extract the audio (deinterlace?) from an xvid/ac3?

Thank you to whoever reads and or helps me.

  2. One way is to use AC3 ACM Decompressor with your favorite Video App, like say VirtualDub.

Are you sure MP3 is less "spacy" than AC3?

  3. Ok this answer comes a bit late but maybe i can still help.

@au7usa: yeah mp3 is less "spacy". esp if the mp3 is stereo at the end.

    Now the answer:
I did it once and i did it this way:
I opened the *.avi in VirtualDub. I extracted the *.wav and renamed it to *.ac3 then i used "Media Twins Software - AC3 Decoder" to code it to a stereo-wav. Then i inserted this *.wav into the movie again via VirtualDub. While inserting it i encoded it with LameMP3 into a 192kbps audio.
it worked well and the result was god

  4. The size of ANY compressed audio (or video file) is determined by the bitrate used to encode it and the playing time, nothing else.

Therefore mp3 is not less 'spacey' the Ac3 as such. If the Ac3 audio in the avi is 5.1 and was ripped direct from a DVD then it is probably encoded at around 448kb/s. Reducing it to two channels (stereo) will allow you to re-encode it at a much lower bitrate with little loss of quality, as there are only 2 rather than 6 channels to encode.

  5. Did i spell "spacey" wrong?

    I'm Sorry!
