Hey,
===========Old Problem, See New Problem Below!!!===========
I just got in my Lite-On LVD-2002. I am very excited about it. I hooked it up to my TV through RCA first and when I play a xvid/divx file in widescreen it stretches the image too much. Its "widescreen" but the black bars are REALLY small and the picture is stretched, because captain archer (for you trekkies) or Jack Bauer (who doesnt love 24?) look really stretched out. So my first thought was the video must be switched to pan& scan or something obvious like that. But i go into those settings and try all 3, pan&scan, letterbox, and 16:9 and I get the same results, it doesnt change a bit. I tried this through S-VIDEO as well and got the exact same result. My tv is a 4:3 projection, Panasonic. If anyone has any ideas, please help me!

===================New Problem====================
Hey Again!
Alright that worked great, thanks so much casey. I have one more little problem, some xvids i play with mp3 audio are out of sync. By a little over a second, its not that bad but is extremley noticible. I also tried updating the firmware (the latest according to the site) but when i tried the player said that a newer version is already installed and aborted the install. Any ideas on that? Are there any beta firmwares or anything out for this player?
Thanks!

I have the LVD-2002, the zoom option functions differently on xvid/divx files than it does with a regular dvd or vcd. So here's what ya do....
1. Put in the disc and let it start
2. Once the movie is playing press the "zoom" button on the remote.
3. Now use the directional arrow keys to adjust the ratio
I found it is best to start from the sides
"<" will shrink the ratio horizontally
">" will enlarge the ratio horizontally
The up and down arrows do the same thing vertically... Its a great player...so far I haven't had a problem.
...and Matt, not that I care all that much but ya may want to watch the "gay" comments...you may get flamed by some PC sensitive types. -
Alright, I did a little more playing and figured out that its just XVIDs that have the out of sync problem. But not every xvid, i can take two xvids, lets say episode 1 and 2 of the simple life. Episode 1 is encoded with xvid and mp3 audio, no problem, episode 2 same, but way out of sync. I can burn episode 2 on a cd by itself or a cd with episode 1 and get the same result. I tried putting the beta firmware for 2001 on my 2002 but it wont do it. It seems like either the video is starting too late or the audio is starting too early. The voices are way ahead of where the video is. Hope that sorta made sense, any help would be appreciated!
Thanks for all your help -
Well...the problem is that xvid is kind of an open source mpeg4 codec, meaning that anyone with the source code can develop there own codec (if you know what you're doing) While theLVD-2002 will play most xvid/divx variants it will not play them all as there is no set standard for them. They can have different aspect ratios different audio bitrates and codecs yadda...yadda...yadda... anyway if you get a xvid/divx that dont play right either re-encode (many guides to do just that on this site) or make them into an (S)VCD. I have been able to play around 80% of all the xvid/divx files I have thrown at it. Its a crap shoot...but one with good odds. So until they standardize mpeg4 thats what we have to deal with.
The problem as to "The Simple Life" is that one ep probably has Constant BitRate (CBR) audio and the other ep probably has a Variable BitRate (VBR) audio. The one with the VBR is probably throwing the audio out of whack. Install Virtualdub and you can check file info before you burn it to disc. The minute you try to load a video with VBR Virtualdub will tell you.
Anyway...good luck

Hey,
I looked into it a little more and it seems that they are all VBR, but some have trouble playing in sync while others do not. Anyone else experiencing this? I would just re-encode them but that defeats the purpose of buying this player!
Thanks,
Matthew -
I ran into the problem before. There is one quick way to fix it though. Use the Search button to jump to somewhere. It will fix the sync problem. I usually jump to 2 sec and it fixes the problem just fine!

Man, thanks for you help, i was pretty excieted about that solution but it doesnt seem to work for me! If anyone else has suggestions, keep them comeing, I really appreciate it.

Well it was merely a guess...as I said before It could be a myriad of different things...It could be simply that the vid was encoded wrong in the first place...or bad keyframing during the encoding...maybe the player has problems decoding VBR at specific sampling rates as I said in my last post Xvid and Divx are not standardized like DVD's SVCD's and VCD's are. You will find these are probably the only solutions out there. It really doesn't defeat the purpose of the player. It will play most of the popular mpeg4 codecs. Try just re-encoding it to a different mpeg4 type codec...like divx5. Here are your options:
1. Re-Encode to a different codec or Re-Encode with CBR audio values
2. Convert to SVCD or VCD
3. Attempt to correct the .avi with a divx repair program (I have yet to find one that truly works)
You really cant expect a player to play every single file you throw at it...especially a format that has varying audio and video codecs different sampling rates, different aspect ratios, and frame sizes. I think you are really fighting against a lack of knowledge on the format.
Really though is the simple life really worth it... really? The Surreal Life maybe...just for the Hedgehog alone. -
Hey!
My The Simple Life, Tru Calling, The O.C., 24, and Enterprise, many are out of sync with xvid! Does anyone know if the 0301 firmware will be out for the 2002, or does anyone know of any hacked or unofficial firmware around?
--Matthew -
That many out of sync?!?!?!? Something aint right...if any more vids are out of sync take the player back and get a replacement one. Mine has only had problems with 3 files and I've put at least 50 diferent xvid and divx files through it.
-
Hey,
Well its just with xvid, so could there be something physically wrong with it when the divx/vcd/and dvd work perfectly?
Have you tried any other firmwares, i hear there are some hacked ones out there but I havent been able to find any.

I forgot who posted this originally so I apologize for not giving absolute credit but the person posted a short but excellent guide that repairs the audio sync problem. It requires a little patience though....
1.) Load the Avi file.
2.) Under audio click "full processing mode", then click compression where you will select "no compression".
3.) Under file, save the Wav.
4.) Under audio select "no audio", then under video select "direct stream copy".
5.) Save Avi.
6.) Restart VirtualDub.
7.) Load the new Avi without sound, under audio click Wav and open the previously created Wav file, under audio click "full processing mode", under audio click compression and select ADCPM codec.
8.) Save the recombined Avi.
9.) Now most of the time I found I always needed to use the interleaving option.
10.) Under audio click interleaving, this when the patience is needed ... you'll have to make a guess how delayed or ahead the audio is.
11.) Save the Avi with the readjusted audio, check the file (I used Divx Player) and if the audio is still off you'll have to keep adjusting until you get it right. -
problem with VBR is that it only "works" in avis because of a glitch in MS OS, they had to reproduce this glitch in linux in order to make VBR work with avis
so its not something really good, sure makes audio smaller or fits more queality in same space but its by no means a good thing, the moment MS decides to fix that bug all avis with vbr will stop working on MS OS's, if you think vbr is better quality and you like better quality then use AC3 :PPPP, those work in that player also, lot better than VBR, wich gives problems in 1 out of 3 videos lol
