PLEXTOR 708A FIRMWARE, 8X dvd-r and Dual Layer!?!?

I read some german message boards saying that Plextor is making new firmware for the 708a to allow for 8x dvd-r burning and that it will come out at the end of Febuary. It also said they were also be making dual layer firmware for this drive. (they would be firmware updates 1.05 and 1.06)

I contacted Plextor and they said both of these were impossible. Does anybody know if they are possible, I mean if the drive can burn dvd+r at 8x shouldnt it be capable at burning dvd-r at 8x? I could understand them not burning dual layer but just wanted to know if anyone could tell me if it were possible or if the rumors were true.

I love this drive, but wish I would have waited another month to get a dual layer burner.

Dual layer is impossible, it has to be set up in the hardware, not software.

Where did you hear that dual layer dvd burners will be avalible next month?

Oh well I didnt mean exactly a month, I just meant that I bought this burner now now soon they coming out with a dual layer burner... Sorry for the confusion. However the plexter person I emailed said that New burners were coming out very soon, but he didnt give an exact date.[/quote]

I really want to wait and get a dual layer, All I know is products seemed to be announced way before actually released.

I dont want to be waiting around till 05 for one. o well I do have a Mac DvD burner so I guess that will tied me over
