  1. When I play back dvd's I have authored with TMPGEnc Dvd Author on my dvd player, about 10% of my picture is missing from the left edge of the screen.

The same authored dvd's play fine on my laptop, the whole picture being visible, as it appears on the original avi. I'm using Intervideo WinDVD for playback of the authored dvd on my laptop.

I have tried the same dvd's on my friends dvd player and the same thing happens. The left edge of the picture is cut off.

Any ideas what i could be doing wrong and at what point?

I'm also using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to convert AVI's to MPEG2 which i then Author in TMPGEnc DVD Author.

What ratio is the film in? More than likely it's just the TV overscan area, which is normal on a tube TV. An LCD screen has no overscan area, so you see the whole image.

  3. Thanks for the swift reply.

GSpot says the ratio is 2.63:1 but i think you are probably right about it just being overscanning by my TV, particular as the dvd seems to play full screen on my laptop.

Never knew about overscanning, or noticed it before. So thanks for that bit of information. I only really picked up on the cropping as some of the credits were missing.

Just reassuring to know that it might not actually be a fault in my conversion process from avi to dvd. Didn't want to waste any more time and blank dvd's if it was.

Is there a way to get around this cropping and would it be worth trying?

If you use TMPGENC as your encoder, you can go into the "clip frame" and choose "center (keep aspect ratio)" and it will display the whole frame in the middle of the screen, this is called "window paning" or something like that, kinda like what they did on the Lion King DVD.
