I've had a AMW V101 DVD Player which plays just about everything so I've been making backups of my dvds to CVDs successfully..I recently switched my main DVD Player to a Panasonic CV-51 DVD Player which plays VCD's but not SVCD. Out of curiousity I tried playing my CVDs in the Panasonic player and what do ya know..the Panasonic loads up and starts to play the CVD but very choppy leaving it unwatchable due to it being jittery and skips..I'm thinking it loads and plays the CVD because its a valid DVD resolution (352X480)?
So my question is:
1. Any future encoding suggestions on getting CVD playback on my Panasonic DVD Player? Its possible that it won't play the CVD because I encoded my CVD audio at 48Khz and the Panasonic might be strict on standards? Btw I don't want to do the VCD Header Trick and I'm persistent on getting CVD playback because it loads and plays..just jittery and skips.
2. Is it possible for some DVD Players to be able to play CVD but not SVCD?
Thanks.

You mean cDVD ?
What bitrate are they ?
Too high a bitrate will cause effects like you describe.
48Khz is correct for cDVD. It is 1/2 D1 spec.
Any future encoding suggestions ...........

Dunno if I can be helpful here, but I experienced a somewhat similar prob. My Philips Q40 stand-alone is capable of playing back SVCDs but I had weird results when feeding it CVDs. All I did was to set the audio sample rate to 44.1 instead of (the CVD standard) 48 and that solved the problem.
Give it a try, it may work. -
CVD Standard audio is 44100 NOT 48000...
The only way to play your CVDs on your panasonic, is to transfer them to DVD-Rs.

As a cvd is merely an out-of-spec svcd (not really a std) .. this enables it to benefit from mode2 burning, meaning extra space (12%) on each cdr. However cDVD or miniDVD (authored at 352x576) is a "proper" DVD and benefits from being able to be authored and burn as such (any dvd authoring program, fancy menus & chapters). However you do not get mode2 burning so lose the extra space, also the res is smaller .. the choice is yours...
*does dvdshrink work on half/D1 DVD?
any percentages are probably totally inaccurateCorned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.

@RabidDog: CVD is a standard for China. Is not commercially exist in Europe an USA.
cDVD or miniDVD is not a standard at all. Most DVD player won't play it.
DVD Shrink works with all kind of DVDs. -
