Quality of DV captures vs. capturing other ways. Particularly, the argument that DV looks "washed out" and the occassional jagged edge.

Also, does converting to MPEG 4:2:0 fix stuff like that?

washed out - no , never seen that (and im capturing d-beta and beta sp to dv sometimes through a laird blueflame so i can compare the diff.)

jagged edges -- sometimes , depends on a number of things - generally nothing to concern with ..

mpeg doesnt fix anything - though nothing there really to fix ...

is it the same as capturing component or sdi uncompressed? - no

is is broadcast quality or better - yes

DV has been and is used in for film transfers .... several movies now were shot completly on DV

quality of your camera is going to play the most major part (along with your source as equal importaince (maybe even more importaint) --second the quality of the compression (in the camera or external convertor) ..

    OT...

Do you like your Laird BlueFlame? We have one at work, and I wasn't totally impressed with the video while still in the computer. For a $2500 format convertor I wasn't real impressed, need to try digitizing something live from the studio cameras to see what that looks like. Is there a Laird codec somewhere I should look for? Our model is (I think) LTM-5500, it has the knobs for audio level and large push buttons and toggle switch to go into YUV mode, not the newer membrane type buttons. At any rate, it is going out for repair as the composite out doesn't work. Hopefully our dealer can loan me another BlueFlame while it is out, or maybe a Datavideo DAC-10 if they have one.

i have a older LTM-5500 just like yours and it has been in for repair 3 times because the component didnt work properly (colors were off) , i have been borrowing new style one for about 4 months (i refuse to return it to dealer - haahaha) and it has better quality all around .. best quality oddly enough seems to come from the svideo in and component out (beta sp as source) , though this shouldnt be ..

i know of some people with promax's and they have had issues also (mostly with avid) .... if i didnt want/need component I/O and 422 control (guess not a point w/ the laird as its a seperate thing) - i might just get a canopus unit (lot cheaper) ...

the laird uses the phillips codec internally im pretty sure .. you of course dont need this on your system ....
