I've been burning dvd's for about 3-4 months now and I have a number of software programs I use...DVD Shrink, DVD Decrytpor, Nero 6 Ultra Edition to burn the dvd's and have been doing video editing for about 6-7 years now....I just ran into a problem that I don't even know what it could be...I have a few ideas but I just hope someone can help me out with this.
I have recently ripped/burned a number of DVD's like Bad Boys 2 and X-men 2 united along with a number of other titles which I have backed up...But for some reason They don't play right at times...Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't...Like last night I watch X2: X-men United and it played fine 100% through...today I played bad boys 2 on my Sony DVP-S360 DVD player and and a certain point the dvd just becomes unreadable and goes back to a different chapter...This problem HAS happened with actual domestic copies straight from the store shelves but going back to the scene it happened to just plays right through...
But today my brother was watching X2: X-men United and for some reason the dvd became unreadable and a certain point and the DVD player froze.....I took it out and popped it in my ps2 to find out that my ps2 can play burned dvd-r which made me happy but as the movie went on it started skipping towards the end and than a message popped up stating "DVD Unreadable"....I've always followed the same methods I always do when I burn DVD's...I use DVD Shrink beta 3 with Deep Anaylsis to rip, Nero to burn and verify the files...And use DVD2AVI to check the files my self to make sure it plays through till the end.....(I've had problems where the dvd data is corrupted at certain points so I always verify with DVD2AVI). Thing is these DVD's (X2: X-men United and Bad Boys 2) All passed every test...They showed no sign of corruption...My ps2 is rather old and ESPECIALLY my dvd player which is running about I'd say 5 years now maybe a lil more or less can't remember....Is it a possibility that my dvd player and ps2 are somewhat outdated for DVD-R discs and sometimes become unreadable?....Or maybe perhaps my dvd's are becoming corrupted?
Here are my computer specs:
p4 3 gigahertz with 800 fsb and ht tech.
2 gigs pc 3200 dual channel ddr ram
lite on 52/32/52 cd-rw
Pioneer DVR-A05 OEM (DVR-105...I paid 250 for this sucker when I could of just paid 140...Damn sites ripped me off)
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum 2
so what do you guys think the problem might be?...I don't use cheap dvd-r's either...I use to use these fujifilm dvd's but I heard they weren't that great quality wise...I Could see right through them....I am using Memorex DVD-R's at the moment..I also heard a rumor a WHILE BACK that burning dvd's at 4x might cause bad discs....is this true or just a rumor?..please get back to me asap as this problem is aggrivating the hell out of me....I'm a perfectionist and I don't like it when things go wrong..^_^

Memorex DVD-R's are not very good media at all. Download dvdinfo and see what the media manufacturer code is. My guess would be CMC which is bad media. Alot of people have problems with them. Get some Ritek disc's and try those.
-
Well.....I downloaded and installed and ran it than clicked media with a dvd-r disc in...It does state
"Media code/Manufacturer ID CMC MAG. AF1"
=(..Damn.....So these Ritek?...Any good?...And how much do they cost?...I'm trying to get mass dvd-r's for a good price..Brand name doesn't matter to me I just want to get good media at a good price... -
Ritek is the best media IMO.
You can get a 100 stack for $124.00 or there about. Make sure they are authentic RitekG04 media -
are they ritek/aria?...I checked on pricewatch and I found them but they are 2x!...=(...I want 4x...lol..

I buy mine at www.shop4tech.com, some people have had some problems with shop4tech but I haven't had any problems with anything I've ordered from there...yet.
The discs I buy are:
DVD-R 1X to 4X 4.7GB (Authentic Ritek Media) Bulk by Ritek -
OK, that's exactly the kind of problems i experience.
...the movie freezes and then jumps ahead, sometimes over and over again... mostly (in my movies) when they are near the end...
-Sometimes no problem at all.
I make my movies with dvd shrink3.0 beta5, burn them with clone dvd.
-I Have a Pioneer A106 Burner and usually use princo dvd-R media burnt at 4.
I have a thomson dth500 player wich reads nothing, and a Jocel 300gk wich reads everithing (Sometimes)... -
I do not understand all the fuss and bother about using all these different programs...I just use DVDX COPY and it ALWAYS works great sometimes it uses 2 discs but who cares they are cheap. The quality is perfect as is the sound I bought some bulk OPTODISC 4x dvd-r and they are just fine.
I just put in the disc and go away and 1/2 hr later the disc is done -
yes I have and it works just fine also I did a disc copy of a dvdxcopy backup in nero 6 ultra and it as well worked just fine so it is all good here as far as I am concerned if all you want to do is copy dvd movies then in my opinion DVDXCOPY works great so far I have copied a total of 20 movies and not one coaster

Ikasu,
I think media, burn speed, and how old your DVD player have to do with it. What I want to say it depends...
Well, I have 6 different DVD players (Apex 1500, Sampo 611, Sampo 651, Yamakawa, Sony DVP-S360, Norcent DP315) and with my PC (using PowerDVD), I have 7 ways to play a DVD. I basically backup the DVDs using standard software like you and like other people (DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, Nero 5). The only different now is the DVD media and the burn speed. BTW, for recording I have a Sony DW-10A which is OEM for DRU-500. I found out the followings:
* Ritek and Ritek-made-for-brandname (TDK, Maxell, Fuji, etc.) work the best. Princo also. Somehow, the combination of Nero 5.5 and my DW-10A loves Princo product. It never produce any error. (Well I only use Princo 1X).
* Burning at 1X will produce the most compatible way for my 6 DVD players to read.
* Yes some cheapo DVDs will produce that jump/instability like you described. It must do with the dye they use.
* Yes the older the DVD player, the more likely you will get that instability. In my case, my oldest DVD player is the Sampo 611, which is 3.5 y.o., and it was the workhorse of my playing/testing. You guess it, it does show more instabilities than the other 5.
* The PC is the most forgiving. And that's expected, and so I'm not surprised.
Hope this will help.
Cheers, -
I ordered some ritek 04 dvd-rs for about 27 bucks shipped for a 25 stack. I believe they're 4x as well, so you might want to try meritline.com

I would have to say that after spending COUNTLESS hours reading on this post, Ritek G04s seem to be the way to go. I would suggest you get them. I usually only buy from very reliable and worthwhile dealers to make sure I get quality discs. I bought 150 discs last week and had them shipped for like $155 or so. I think now they even offer free shipping at most places since it's after Christmas.
I have multiple DVD players (new and old) and have tried multiple burning options and multiple discs. I think I can say from experience that the ONE factor that seems to contribute to discs skipping, errors occurring, and frustration ensuing is BAD/CHEAP/UNRELIABLE media.
I believe that paying $0.20--$0.50 per disc more is FAR worth it in the long run. But that's just me.As I always say in this forum regarding DVD issues, and as is my motto in life: You get what you pay for!! -
When I first bought my burner I bought a 5 pack of Memorex at office max. Now while I never had any problems with the memorex I was needing to buy some more blank discs and I was just reading and researching this forum and others to see what issues others were having. Someone on here told me "Save yourself the headache, just buy Ritek discs and you won't have any problems".
I took him at his word and I bought Ritek media (25 pack) and I've never used any other media since. I have never had a compatibility problem with any DVD player new or old. Wide range compatibility was a big issue for me since I make original DVD videos for people. Doing a job of 65 highlight DVD's for one of the local high schools, compatibility is a major issue. I am happy to say that using RitekG04 media I have never had anyone return or complain about my DVD not playing in their DVD player. I have literally 1000's of DVD's floating around and no problems ever with the Ritek media. I took my first burn on a Ritek disc to Best Buy and just started putting it in DVD players...they asked me to quit but the one guy was cool with it, so I check every DVD player I could and it played in all of them and I was sold from then on.
So to who ever told me to go with Ritek and be done with it...Thank You, you saved me a huge amount of time and gave me and my little video business a dependability which has brought me many new customers and keeps folks coming back.
So for you guys who want to save a couple of cents per disc, good luck, continue the fight for "low price but yet high quality". I'm sold on Ritek media and I won't buy anything else. -
geez ok already ...so I made a minor mistake, its not like its a secret or anything. I think however that I only need to be reminded ONCE I do not need everyone telling me the same thing. Besides I was only stating my opinion and forgot it was against forum rules.
-
I know the Riteks are pretty much a religion on the forums but I would like to point out that some people's experience can be different depending upon burner, player(s), etc. Experiment and stick with what works for you.
For the 8 months I've used Verbatim 4X and rarely paid over a $1.10 or so a disc. With my Plextor I can burn at 8X and have yet to produce a coaster. Last week I stumbled across a 25 pack of TDK 4X for $25 and have so far burned 4 at 4X and 4 at 8X. No coasters.
I'm not a Memorex fan usually but I got a good deal on 5 +RW's so for the past week I've been using them to timeshift some TV show captures. They sem to burn fine at 4X and play well on my Pioneer standalone.
I recommend keeping an open mind and watch for the sales and rebates.
