Is it possible to rip dvds complete with 5.1 sound, if so what software provides the best results and if possible the easiest method, also the downloadable rips in avi format, do divx rips by others tend to have true 5.1 reproduction or are they stereo only (in general) any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

yes of course..i make mini dvds and just choose direct auidio in flask and multiplex the outputted audio with the mpeg-2 video..i use spruce up or bbmpeg...and the result is a mpeg2/ac3 file that plays on my hollywood plus and on my afreey dvd player which output the audio to my dolby digital 5.1 decoder..im not sure about avi/divx..but it is posible..but obviuolsy youd need a soundcard that supports digital 5.1 output

Hi, probably should have said that I want to burn to cd to play on dvd played and tv which supports 5.1, in case its needed for conversion soundcard is sb platinum live, have not tried flask or multiplex yet, are they straightforward, have used tmpgenc for encoding but find that it wont accept some avi's saying that they are not compatible, as I'm new to this am looking to establish a standard process to get used to, but there are a lot of different programs that its not easy to choose which are best, everyone seems to have their favourites, but to me preference has to be given to audio quality. All advice gratefully received.
Thanks -
There are very very few dvd players which support mini-dvd. If you have one of those then you can have 5.1 sound played through your dvd player. There is also a format called multichannel mpeg audio which will allow you to encode a 5.1 channel track and author it into a compliant svcd. Again there are very very few hardware combinations which support this, to the point where its nearly impossible to get it to work.
Sorry to be sound so pessimistic but there is probably no way your going to get 5.1 sound through a dvd player unless you switch to dvd-r/w. For vcds and svcds there is really only support for a stereo signal which can be decoded into prologic.
In regards to divx, in general most do not have 5.1 sound. They usually re-encode the audio to mp3 which results in a stereo signal. Its very easy to implement 5.1 audio in divx rips, and some releases do have this. All you do is mux the video in with an ac3 stream. This results in a much larger filesize which really defeats the purpose of divx in my opinion, so thats why not all releases are like this. -
Well I guess thats saved a lot of heartache, so if i'm going to settle for pro-logic surround is this encoded differently or will most rip programs rip to this standard

Most ripping/encoding combinitions will downsample your audio to dolby suround, which can be decoded in prologic or dolby surround, depending on your hardware. So its really all taken care of for you.
