  1. lo mates i have a Question.
I friend of mine says that when you rip a DVD the DVD-Reader is more exposed to wear than usual.
    Is this true?
According to him you can rip approx 150 DVD and after that the DVD is more or less broken.
    Sorry for my bad english

It is true the dvd device wears more but 150 dvd`s sounds like caca to me,It all depends on the quality of the dvd device, some can break down in a month will others can last for at least a few years and well more than 150 dvd rips.

Ask your friend where he gets this data from, and check it yourself. If he cannot recall where, or the reference is no longer available, I wouldn't give it too much credibility.

150 that certainly puts my DVD-ROM on borrowed time , varies from drive to drive I expect bit even the crappiest drive should do far more than 150

  5. It depends what you usually use it for, surely.

If you use it for watching films, I wouldn't say there was much in it - although it will probably rip much quicker than you would watch a film, so if anything you could say the life expectancy in hours would take longer to reach.

If, however, you use you DVD-ROM to chock the wheels on your car or hammer nails in with, I would say it would last a damn sight longer when used for ripping.

I was kinda in the same boat. I had a Pioneer104 for like almost 2yrs. Made close to 300DVDs and 100 PS2/Xbox games. I used it every now and then to rip a DVD or game but not much. Just the other day i was getting 'communication errors' in Nero and other errors in Recordnow Max. So i figured the drive was done. A friend of mine told me it probably just need a laser cleaning. But it was too late and i already had bought a SonyDRU510a for $150.(not bad considering the Pioneer was $250 at that time)

Anyways to make a long story short, i cleaned the laser for the hell of it and sold it to my friend for $60. He hooks it up at his house and it was fine.

Now with the Sony, i got the DSS prog to rip upto 12x. But in fear of something similar happening again, i doubt ill be using this drive to rip much. Although i have heard the laser in the SonyDRU510a is superb...I dunno LoL
