I've been trying to make backups of my dvds , something that would fit on a standard 650m cdr.I've tried different rippers and smartripper seems ok..then I go on to try to encode and I seem to always miss something ,I've tried DIVx,
Flashmpeg,DVD2AVI,and some others and follow published tutorials to the letter but something always falls short.
Maybe the tutorials are outdated, maybe the app versions I'm using don't correspond to the specific instructions I download ...for whatever reason it has been a trying effort , and I have yet to acquire a finished file that is playable thru Mediaplayer 7.1. I'm using Windows 98se and I've read somewhere that there is a 4 gig file size limit,
is this true?? If so how does one work around this to create a single continous movie recordable to CDR?If you know how its done , or where to find excellent tutorials(for the impecably slow witted) please respond ...Thank you

The best way I have found to make legal backups of my DVD's is to buy a hardware MPEG2 encoder, which captures in real time either MPEG1 (yuk) or MPEG2 so you can demux it and burn your MPEG2 to SVCD or MPEG1 to VCD, but a Dazzle II encoder is $299 and a happuage PVR encoder(I have) $249, but sure been worth it to me I can backup a 90min. DVD in about 2 hours in SVCD and it looks fantastic.

If you're really having that much trouble with the guide try DVD2SVCD (d/load & install newest bundle at http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net).
You'll also need CCE 2.5 SP, you can find the demo of it and the DVD2SVCD manual at:
http://www.doom9.org (look under The Guides | DVD2SVCD, tried to get url but site is temp down)
There's also a link to the DVD2SVCD Q&A/Faq at the bottom of the guide.
The CCE 2.5SP Demo will put a watermark/logo in the bottom right of your encodes, but I hear that there's a crack to get rid of this
As for setting, just follow the guide. Although I prefer:
DVD2AVI - forcefilm on
CCE - multipass set to 3 -
no links for cracks!

But are there any apps that can compress a whole movie (+-100 mins.) onto a single cdr?
-
It really depends on you. Do you want really good quality? Then use 2discs. If the quality doesn't mean THAT much to you then try lowering video or audio bitrates. You CAN fit movies on 1 disc, but you will have to sacrifice something.

I totally agree with you inquisitor. I am no idiot, the guides simply aren't 100% accurate/up to date. For ripping, smartripper is excellent and straightforward. For conversion I found flask misses (jumps) past the first 3 minutes of film. What good is this? Other convertors simply do the first vob and dont complete the rest, meaning you would then need additional software to merge your mpegs together. The only method I have found that is fail safe is as follows:- Use the dvd2avi app only to convert your audio into a wav file. When you then open tmpgenc you MUST ensure that you have the vfapi (plugin). Download this application from the relevant site (see tools), ensuring that the plugin is contained with it (some options offer it without). Refer to Seffys (notes and problems section) reiterating the need for various folders to be stored in the same location. This is very important. You will find that tmpgenc will then except both the wav audio file (created by dvd2avi) and the d2v file (your video source). Hope this doesn't sound too difficult. You will honestly be laughing when you eventually see how easy it all is. You should end up with 2 mpeg files (these can be cut using tmpgenc - read seffys guide. Let me know if you have any further probs!
Good luck.

Just a quick correction of something I said earlier. The program that (jumps) missing the first few minutes of encoding for a film is DVDx v1.4. Does anyone know haow to correct this? The problem with FLASK is that I only managed to encode the first vob from using it. It doesn't automatically follow through with the rest like TMPGENC does. Any responses to this would be welcomed.

I couldn't disagree more. The guides are not only accurate, but they are straight forward to follow.
Here's the guide that I've been using since day-1:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdtovcd.htm
What is it about this guide that makes you think that it is inaccurate?

sracer - The guide you are using is fine, the fact that the useage of the vfapi plugin is not fully referred to until the notes and problems section does not help.
My questions relate to the correct useage of Flask and dvdx v1.3. Both of these applications do not seem to function correctly in accordance with the guides. Dvdx misses the first few minutes of the first vob file (how is this overcome?) and flask only encodes the first vob to mpeg, and not the whole thing in 1 go like tmpgenc. I'm really sorry if its me just missing something here, but if anyone can clear this up I would be grateful.
