i want to fit a 3.5 hour show on one dvdr, i recorded the first 1.5 hours in 3 hour mode, but that is because i thought it would be only 3 hours long in total, not 3.5 hours. is it possible to record the next segment of the show in a different reord mode, ie 4 hour mode so that i can fit on one disc? or will this create probs when i want to rip that dvd? i am recording on dvd+rw but i want to transfer it to dvd+r once i have reorded it. can you mix record modes on the same disc? will it create problems in ripping?

You can certainly use different record modes on the same disc just as with a VHS tape you could have a mixture of long play and standard play on the same tape.
Only had DVD recorder a couple of days so not had chance to rip to PC yet.

its just that i did this before and when i ripped the disc to my hdd the files were 8gig in total, which obviously i couldnt burn to a dvdr so i just wondered if other users of this recorder had experienced this?

  4. I also have a DVDR70, you said you recorded 1.5 hours in 3 hour mode.
So you have 50% of the dvd left for the rest of the recording. in 4 hour
mode you should be able to record 2 hours in that mode, thus the
disc will containt 3.5 hours total.
And that will be 4,3 Gb data total.
You speak of 8 gb, that is very strange because a dvd+rw only holds
4,3 Gb max. so it is impossible to have 8Gb on it!
The 3.5 hours can be copied than to your PC with a normal windows explorer, no ripping needed.

i know it sounds strange, but when i did this before the ripped files showed up as 8gig on my computer. i think the different record modes confuse the ripper somehow. i was ripping with dvd decryptor, not for any reason but i just use decryptor cos its easy and straight forward, even though i know the disc didnt need decrypting. i never tried ripping in just buy copying and pasting the files off the dvdrw disc. when i tried burning the 8 gig oif files nero obviously told me it was too big for the disc i was burning too, but those files had come straight off the dvd+rw i had just recorded on so i think maybe mixing recod modes is not a good idea?
i urge you to try it and see if you get the same results.

  6. I'm puzzled about why you're using DVD Decrypter to rip the files to your HDD. I've got a DVDR70 and just copy the Video_TS folder from the DVD I recorded on the Philips using Windows Explorer. Never had a problem.

Just a thought about the 8gig issue though. The way that Philips create the DVD structure means that you end up with 2 identical program chains. This means that, when I want to import a title into TmpegDVDAuthor from a disc recorded in my DVDR70, I see twice as many titles available to import as there actually are on the disc. I don't know what mode you were using DVD Decrypter in but perhaps it was ripping the same data twice due to the duplicated info in the IFO files?

i was use dvd decryptor for a few reasons,
    1. i find it rips quicker, dont ask me how or why but it does.
    2. its easy to use.
    3. i just use it out of habit from ripping comercial dvds.
i was ripping in file mode and burning the files with nero. i will try a mixed mode recording and ripping it straight from the video ts file without dvd decryptor and see if the same thing happens.
