2 of them look like this.
And the other 2 look like they normally do.
Any ideas on why they look like that and how to change them back.

Well you could make some more via my computer and drag onto your desktop.
Or Right click on pic and select Properties then Shortcut tab then change icon and pick the right one.
Looking at the pics its lost the path to disk or icon pic somehow....But then this is windows we are talking about so anything is possible..
Not bothered by small problems...

I also had omething simalar happen to me asWindows (XP) caches the icons . That way it doesn't have to look inside each file every time you boot. But the icon cache can become corrupted, or maybe too small.
To do this manually, go to Start | Run and enter Regedit to launch the Registry Editor. Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer. In the right-hand pane, find or create the DWORD value MaxCachedIcons. To enlarge the cache size, double-click on this value and change it to 4096 in decimal. If the problem recurs, try an even larger value.
Next, you must force Win XP to reread all the cached icons. Right-click on the desktop, choose Properties, click on the Appearance tab in the dialog box that pops up, and click on the Advanced button on that tab. Select Icon in the Item list and increase the Size setting by 1 pixel (this will normally be from 32 to 33). Click on OK to dismiss the Advanced Appearance dialog, then click on the Apply button. The desktop will fade and then return back to normal. Now click on the Advanced button again, change the icon size back to what it was, click on OK, and click on OK again.
or try Tweakui from Microsoft

slick rick,
did you recently install a program that screws with your theme?
you might want to try changing your theme and then change it back to the default (or whichever you were using) and then see if it works correctly. -
jeex,
Thanks my friend, I'll give that a try and let you know what happened.

well if it happened after you installed those screen savers, i would uninstall them just to see if that works. i actually d/l'd some screen saver from that site and havent had a problem.
oh and did you check microsoft's site to see if there is an article on that? -
I had a problem awhile back where ALLO my icons turned into shrubbery.
Looked like King's "The Shining" with the animal sculpted hedges.
Went to MS knowledge base. Problem was corrupted "icocache.dll " or something like that. Remedy was to delete and reboot, Win would rebuild the dll.
It worked for me.
Go to MS and do a search for "corrupted icons ", some variations. Should find it w/o too much hunting.
I don't think it can be your IDE drivers, but possible.
Cheers,

you might want to check and see if a rouge autorun.inf file is residing in the root of your c: drive..
you could also change your icons to anything you want..

But on topic, I had a thing like this happen to ALL my icons. Not the desptop ones, but the one that represent files. My mp3s took on the notepad icon, mpgs, the MS Word icon and so on. It was pretty damn scary, I thought I got a nasty virus but I came up clean. I rebooted and it went away. I run 98Se so yeah I probably deserved it LOL I have a 2000 disc but I like my old buddy 98SE 8)A bird in the hand is worth a foot in the tush-Kelly Bundy -

Rick.
Go to this page to read about a possible repair. Pay attention to the 1st and 4th, the F5 key, and the ShellIconCache File, with the color depth setting.
I have 98, you have XP. When I had the problem, the repair was to delete the File, and it would be recreated upon Startup. It worked for me. I thought, still think, a virus got past my virus prog.
Here's the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:
80/support/kb/articles/q132/6/68.asp&NoWebContent=1
I hit Return after support.microsoft.com: that put a space before the 80/support. Didn't want to scroll sideways. Just backspace to delete the space between com:80
Hope this helps.
