Two examples of Hi-Def DVD innovators who individually are embracing and extending existing intellectual property are Microsoft with Windows Media 9, and Pixonics' version of HD-DVD. Both can be made backward compatible with existing red-laser players and discs.
It is kind of old, but gives a hint of what they are trying to do.
