Ok, I got the Magic Spin 8X dual format burner (DD0401) from OM during their "deal" and I can't seem to burn CDR's with HD-Burn in any version of Nero. I get a "power calibration error" before the burn initiates. Although, i can burn DVD's (at 4x) and regular CDR's just fine. I have also read that you can burn TDK +R 4x media @ 8x with this burner but it also results in coasters. Which brings me to my question.
For owners of the rebadged optorite (Magic Spin, and IO Magic), what firmware have y'all successfully flashed this drive with? I have heard reports of people not being able to flash with updates on assestek's and optorite's site, or that the flashes kill the drive and render it useless.
I know that 130I works with the IO/MagicSpin drive, but also heard that it takes away HD-Burn capabilities. So is firmware version 120E the solution? (on the screen to flash it to 120E it shows my current firmware 110E, and under the place for what firmware version it will flash it to, i get non comprehensible characters...it's supposed to say "flash to: 120E") Any help is appreciated!

Flashed my MagicSpin 8X drive that I got from Office Max today . Flashed with Optorites firmware version 120E . Everything still works okay , as a matter of fact better . Before the upgrade could only get RICOHJPNO1 discs to burn in 12 to 13 min . After flashing time is now 9 to 10 min. .
Keep it on the big cam ! -
thanks for the reply. I also flashed my drive with 120E, however i got an error @ the end saying the flash failed. HOWEVER, upon checking my drive with Nero drive info and that DVDinfo prog, my drive's firmware is now 120E... strange.... but HD-Burn works. but i tried to burn a TDK +R disc @ 8x, and i got a power calibration error, however i can still burn fine @ 4x. ugh. Can't wait for the new firmware to come out thatll enable 8x -R burning

Hey, let me jump in on this thread; I promise I'm not hijacking it. I have the same drive, and had the same power calibration error issue, but only intermittently. I flashed my firmware and had no issues with the process (and never a power calibratrion error again), but my main error still maintains.
It seems that EVERY time I burn to Memorex DVD+R Nero (6.0) goes through the entire process until the Lead-Out and crashes.
Is this a known problem with the Optorite drives? I have burned to Imation DVD-R's without issue, but I can only burn to Memorex DVD+R with DVD Decrypt currently. Am I just getting lucky that it's working with DVD Decrypt, is there issue with the media, or does Nero 6 have issues?
I have again flashed the firmware to 130I and the problem persists.
I'm wasting so much money on media, it's almost worth it to pay the CompUSA 15% restocking fee and get a Sony. Is there a solution? Or are we all stuck with poor quality device. -
rwm, It seems that EVERY time I burn to Memorex DVD+R Nero (6.0) goes through the entire process until the Lead-Out and crashes.
I had that EXACT same problem the first time i used my drive ! i was trying to burn a TDK +R disc at 8x... ever since then, i've used 4x successfully... and i also reverted back to the nero 5.5.10 disc they bundled... -
I too got that IOMagic Rebagged optiwrite, and cannot locate firmware for it. I had a Pioneer A05 drive (DVD-R/RW) only and worked fine. I got some of that Staples Optimum media and burned 1x at 2x over 200 pieces never a coaster.
I installed the IOMagic DVDRW 1008 drive (rebag) it wont burn DVD-R media. 3 or 3 burns, failed after 1% burning through Nero6.
Sure it burns the Memorex 4X DVD+R no problem.
Sure it burns the Optimum 2X DVD+R no problem.
I'd hate to burn 100+ pieces of DVD-R media I have on the shelf, but i could just go back to my Pioneer A05 drive.
Any ideas I should try? -
iotp, i think you have the BTC drive, not the optorite. http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/List_DriveVersions.asp?ListWhat=DRW%201008IM%20(DV DRW%20IDE1008) has some firmwares, however I'm not sure if its the newest stuff. hope it helps.
edit* found some more stuff: http://www.btcusa.com/english/3-1-4driver_download_dvd_dual.htm -
My drive was bundled with Pinnacle (
), which I can't quite figure out how to burn an ISO DVDR image with. I don't trust that it will work any better than Nero, however, since the bundled blank DVD-R seemed to be equally incompatible as it too failed to complete lead-out. I feel as if they package whatever they can re-distribute cheapest, not what will be most compatible.
I've been burning only at 4x speed when those errors occurred, but I'll give it one more try with 2.4x on a Memorex DVD+R. Hopefully it's just media, right now this drive is becoming quite the little money pit.
I'll give Nero 5.5 a try too, we'll see what happens. -
I too bought a magicspin 8x. Opened the box and discovered I had the BTC1008 as well, flashed to the newest firmware 54
Prior to that I had an optorite dd0203 (+/- 4x) and burned 3 movies, no problems using a 25 pack of Khypermedia -R 2x (yes, I know cheap media). All three played in my 3 standalone players. I even burned one at 2.4x (don't know why that was an option).
Using the same software, techniques, and media, I promply burned 3 semi-coasters with the BTC. They verified fine after burning (Nero), played on the computer, but would only play in 1 of my 3 standalones. The other two gave bad disc errors.
Exchanged it for the last one at a different OfficeMax, and got the Optorite DD0401. Burned to the same media using the same files, etc. No Problems! Have done 2 dvd's sucessfully.
Just wondering why the discs burned with the optorites worked fine and the ones with the BTC didn't. -
Well, I flashed the drive with IDPFLIDR1008.EXE from the BTC site, still cannot burn the Optmum DVD-R media. Nero 6 states:

One other thing, its Firmware 0054 now. Still no luck. I am going to try and locate some other DVD-R media and see what my results are.

i was just on i/omagic site which is who my DD0401 burner is suppose to be from and we all know it's not , but anyways here is a link to the site they sent me to for the latest firmware update it's version 130i
this is 130e http://www.accesstek.com.tw/upload/download.php?hDFile=file/firmware_tb_0_50&hSFile=fi...0cdca54e334425

hope this helps..... -
So far so good with my Optorite (I/O Magic) after updating the firmware to 130I. I haven't yet tried Nero 6.0 again, nor have I reinstalled Nero 5.5 after my previous experience with failed disc's when writing lead-out (+R's).
BUT, I can burn without issue (6 consecutive now) with DVD Decrypter. In fact, after about 25%, my burner will speed right up to 8.1x. This is with 4x rated media (both Memorex and TDK).
Sooo... This means (at least for me) that the Optorite will burn up to 8.1x on Memorex DVD+R and TDK DVD+R ($25 for 20 spindle at Target) and 4x on Iomation DVD-R. These disc's will play on Samsung (4 different models), Sony, and Apex Standalone DVD players and the Pioneer 10x DVD player in my computer.
If you're using this drive for DVD backups I would suggest backing up to .nrg with DVD Shrink and burning the image with DVD Decrypter, and you should have no problems. I've given up on Nero for now, hopefully someone can convince me that it'll work with the new firmware before I try it and waste another DVD. -
I also got the MagicSpin (Optorite drive) from OM. Came with firmware 110E. The only problems I'm having right now is when burning at 8X. I don't have any true 8X media, but I do have Imation 4X RicohJPN01 disks that are on Optorites approved media list for burning at 8X. I've ripped a coupld of movies with DVDShrink. I've tried burning them at both 4X and 8X. The 4X burns are perfect and work everywhere I try them (2 stand-alone units, a NEC 1300, and a LiteOn DVD-Rom drive). The 8X burns have errors at the 1.25GB mark on the disk. I think thats the area where the speed increases from 4X to 8X burn. The disks will play in the Optorite drive, but they won't play in the NEC 1300. After checking the disk for errors with Nero DVD Speed I get a CRC error and it crashes. I haven't had a chance to check them in my Apex 1130 Home unit but I will try that tonight. I doubt they will work. But the same movies play fine when burned at 4X.
I'm wondering if this is something that can be fixed with a firmware upgrade? I know there is an update on the horizon that will allow for 8X-R recording, but I don't want to wait for that. What I know about current Optorite firmware upgrades are as follows:
110E: My drive came with this and it's the only one I've tried so far.
120E: Not sure what it fixes but apparently people have been able to flash to it. Some reports of bad flashes.
130E: Listed in Accesstek's site, but users of MagicSpin Optorites have not been able to apply it.
130I: Also listed on Accesstek's site and works, but disables HD-Burn. Not real sure if it updates anything other than improved media.
I wish accesstek or Optorite would tell us what was fixed in each firmware upgrade.
Can anyone actually confirm successful 8X burns on the Optorite without any errors? If so what is your setup?
EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm using Nero 6 and DVD Shrink 3.13. Maybe I will try using TMPenc Author to burn. -
donkey_puncher said: Can anyone actually confirm successful 8X burns on the Optorite without any errors? If so what is your setup?
As I detailed above your post I can confirm burning at 8x consistently on 4x rated media. I have had no errors during the burning process nor during playback on any of my test dvd players.
I am using:
I/O Magic Optorite DD0401 8x Dual Format Burner (130I Firmware)
TDK 4x DVD+R -and- Memorex 4x DVD+R
DVD Shrink to rip .NRG Images
DVD Decrypter to write the .NRG Images
NOTE: I can't get Nero 6.0 to work consistently with my burner and Memorex DVD+R's. Additionally, Nero 5.5.10 doesn't recognize my DVD Burner at all!
DVD Decrypter settles at 4x for a few minutes and then speeds up to 8.0 - 8.1x for the duration of the burn. Average burning speed is about 6.5x.
I don't know if a robust system helps but I have fairly new components across the board also. -
After bringing the disks home and checking them again with Nero DVD Speed they appear to be fine on my Optorite burner. The graphy chart is perfect and the average read is about 6.9X. I also tried them in my Apex 1130 Home unit and they work perfectly. This is kind of weird. So really the only thing that is a problem with them is that they won't play in my NEC 1300 at work. I want to try them in more home players. I'm gonna try them in my friends and families players to see what is up.
Maybe I should try DVD Decrypter. I've never used it before. How do you make an NRG file in DVDShrink? My system is fast enough to handle DVD burning. (Athlon 3000, 1GB ram, Radeon 9700 Pro).
Also, what firmware are you using? I'm using 110E, but am considering trying 120E or 130I. -
I also Have a magicspin 8x. Burned some verbatim dvd+r with the mcc code and burned at 8x and some memorex RICOHJPNO1 code at 8x. Also I still have the 110e firmware. The only problem is I think it takes to long to rip a dvd,(close to an hour). Should I update the firmware? Jay
