  1. Has anyone had problems playing back newly burnt dvd+r discs, on PC's with Windows 98 installed?

My dvd disc just freezes the machine. I burnt on a Packard bell dvd+r disc using a Grundig dvdr550 recorder?

  2. It more likley the DVD-Rom drive that is having problems rather than it having anything to do with the OS you are using.

  3. I've tried it on two dvd drives with Win 98 installed, and both machines just froze. I tried playing it on a apple powerbook with a dvd drive and the disc was just spat back out. However, when I tried it on a pc with windows XP, it did play back. Can all these dvd drives be faulty just on one disc?

I also played it on a wharfdale dvd 750, and it did play successfully, however, when it played a recording created at LP quality, the recording filled only half the TV screen.

    Any comments useful!!!!

  4. How did you create the disk, on a standalone recorder or with a PC.?

And yes, I still say its nothing to do with the OS.

You do have DVD player software on all thos machines don't you?

Just because a DVD drive can't read a DVDr does not make it faulty. Many DVD-Rom drives were not designed to read recordable DVD media as it did not exist or was not widespread in use when the drives were designed.

Even some new DVD-Rom drives have difficulty with recordable DVD media.

  5. I recorded the disc on a standalone recorder (Grundig DVDR550)

I have DVD player software on all the machines:

PowerDVD on the PC and Apple DVD player on the mac. In fact on the PC, one of the drives is a standard DVD player, while the other is a Phillips DVDRW 416 writer.

what do you make of the LP recording playing on only half of the screen?

Also, if I was to recreate these discs, by sourcing all the DVD content on to the computer and creating a new dvd via the PC writer, do you think that would make a disc that is playable on all these machines?

+R is not as compatible as -R in some older DVD-ROMs. Apple doesn't like +R either.

Your DVD filled up half the screen because in LP mode it uses 1/2 D1 resolution (352x480/576). Either the recorder didn't properly author the DVD by not setting the correct resolution, or your DVD player incorrectly read the flags that are set by the recorder.

  7. thats interesting about the LP thing. is there any way of sorting this out?

does anyone know about software that allows editing chapter titles before finalizing the dvd+r disc on the standalone recorder.

My Grundig, doesnt seem to allow me to hide chapter titles or edit there name information. I would like to somehow do this before finalising the disc, as it does look awful with the standard info it gives.
