Would it be that the DVD-RW discs that you mention have been recorded over and over again so they started playing up??
Have you tried with a brand new DVD-RW??

  3. i thought it was due to the times i have recorded on them even though HP say you can rerecord on them up to 1000 times but i have brand new dvd-rw disks and still no joy it started when i put 2 movies on one dvd it wouldnt play the 2nd film so i just put one film on then over time it stopped playing them

1000 times = no way!!! Just marketing hype from the manufacturers!
I was able to re-record DVD-RW's up to maybe 30-35 times b4 they messed up!!
As for using new ones on yr machine, i have to offer the following advice:
    1. Maybe ya need to recheck yr authoring/burning method?
    2. Better RW media maybe? It could be that yr player isnt happy with with yr current batch.

About what ya said about yr player stopping playing RW after ya tried a two movie RW on it... hmmm... thats very weird. Hard to imagine that a double movie DVD messed up the laser.
You did mention that performance of yr player has been degrading over time. Could it be that its about to pack it in?? usually RW playback goes 1st when the laser packs in, then ya lose -R playback and finally ya cant even play the pressed DVDs too.

Hope it all works out for ya.
