  1. I'm trying to turn a divx .avi movie into an SVCD to play on my dvd player. So heres the first question.

I looked in the compatiblity list and my DVD player is there, but doesn't say if it supports SVCD or even VCDS. It also doesn't say it does or doesn't in the Manual.

My Model Number is EWD2203 , an Emerson DVD/VCR combo.

If any of you out there that has this or knows it does play SVCDS or VCDS, please let me know.

Now i tried converting and burning a movie, but it didn't play. Now I might not have done it right, so that's why I'm Here.

Also, I have a region one player.

I looked at the information for the divx file and it 25.000 fps, PAL. Now do I need to convert this to a North American FPS? If I do, do I need to convert it BEFORE I make the svcd or AFTER? I can use one of the guides on this site either way, just would like to know before I try it.

Also, I'm using TMPGenc, is that good? Or should I use DVD2SVCD? Which is a better noob program and which gets the job done correctly?

I noticed that when I get some movies, they are in Bin and Cue format. Also after converting the .avi to SVCD last night, i noticed it didnt contain all the folders, just the .mpeg file (It didn;t have EXT,SEGMENT,SVCD folders). So should I have this before I burn, or do I need to do something else after I reencode the movie.

Any other tips and advice and/or suggesting some guides would be really grateful.

That depends on where you live, and what TV system's used at that location...

    Before.

TMPGEnc is a very competent encoder. DVD2SVCD is "just" a front for various different "hardtounderstand" applications - TMPGEnc can be one of them, so you can't compare them.

That is an image of a CD (and might contain anything).

This has then to be authored to SVCD. I'd recommend using VCDEasy for this step.

As for guides, thsi site is equipped with an excellent search facility...

    Yes, definately!
Frame rate conversions are a pain mostly, but give it a try! At least I gather you don't have syncing subs to deal with too...
In short, if it's 25 fps, Extract audio (load the AVI in GoldWave and save wav).
Make wav longer (in time) to be 1,0427093760427093760427093760427 times original (Use WavWorks)
Use AVIFrate to change AVI frame rate to 23.976
Encode using patched AVI as video source, stretced wav as audio source.

Might not be necessary to convert it. My DVD player plays both NTSC and PAL SVCDs just fine. If your burner will burn to a CD-RW, get one to play around with. Then try converting about 5 minutes of your video in both PAL and NTSC and see which works better.
Of course if you're planning on passing out these SVCDs to your freinds, then you might want to go ahead and convert for compatability, but it's best not to otherwise.

Also, your burning software should take care of authoring the SVCD for you. With Nero, you just choose SVCD from the list of formats (5.x) or Make Super Video CD(6.x) and drag and drop your mpeg. Not sure about other software, but should be simular.

  6. When you convert the avi to svcd, you then need to take a program like nero and burn it as 'super video (svcd). It will then put those folders on the cd that a dvd player needs. If you just burn the svcd mpeg as a data file, your dvd player will not recognize it. This site should tell you if your emerson player is compatable (dvd players)...

  8. lookin' at the models above and below yours, it doesn't look good that yours would play vcd or svcd...my suggestion is go buy another player based on the comments at this site.
