  2. Hacked firmware that voids your warranty.

Best to buy a cheap DVD-ROM drive (that will rip faster, anyway) for about £25 and flash that instead.

  4. I seem to recall another HP user posting here recently that the utility you refer to didn't work for them - perhaps the original poster could use the search function to check this out.

Incidentally, don't forget very few people put region coding on their own discs. You only need to worry about the all region aspect if you're going to insist on playing movies from another region in your burner (another reason to use a cheapo drive for the wear and tear use, and leave the costly burner to the lighter duties).

  5. Garry I respect your knowledge but as I've explained before

these writers can be flashed back to the original firmware (saved before flashing) and not likely void the warranty.

    I might be wrong though...
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off.

  6. I didn't think that post refered to HP drives - unless they're made by Ricoh or someone else (some Sony's are Lite-On, for example) in which case I missed the point.

Looking at that post though, one issue regarding firmware.

You do not void your warranty if you flash it with LEGITIMATE firmware, ie supplied by the manufacturer. If you flash it with hacked firmware from Pirate Pete's Illicit DVD Emporium and they can prove that, then that is what throws the warranty out of the window.

And as I have posted before, some drive and firmware combinations are one way - the trouble with forums like these is some people take one answer as being final even if it does not relate to their own circumstances or hardware, and I don't like to think newbies are thinking we advocate or suggest they wreck their hardware. They should be aware that not every change they make can be restored, and in such case a mistake can be quite a costly learning experience.
