I was backing up DVDs with my Optorite 203 that played fine on my Panasonic standalone DVD player. When I back up now using the same process......software, media etc but with a Pioneer106 they arent recognised or wont play at all. The DVDs that wont play will play on another standalone Panasonic and on 2 computers. Since the process is the same and the burns arent bad what could cause them to not play by just using a different burner?

I've heard stories that the Pioneers + burning strategies aren't as "mature" as some other brands. Take for instance the fact that Pioneer up until the 106 was one of the "pioneers" of the - format and doesn't have as much experience with the +. Opposite is true of a company like Lite-On, who until the 411 was + only and some are having problems with errors on the - media with the lite-on's 411 and 811 latest firmware.
I would be sure the Pioneer has the latest firmware. If it does, you may want to use it only for your - media until they suare away the firmware for you. -
The Pioneer 106 is brand new and was flashed with the latest firmware(107?). I ordered some -R media tonight so I can try that. Your explanation sounds reasonable. I wonder why they wouldnt update the firmware better......Optorite seemed good about firmware upgrades.

Hopefully they will. I have both a Pioneer 104 and a Lite-On 811s. The Pioneer won't burn 2x Princo @ 2x without a firmware hack, only 1x while my Lite-On will burn them @ 2x. It just depends on what media they tune the firmware for. I would drop an E-mail to Pioneer support with the media code from DVD Infopro or any other software and tell them your problem and maybe they'll fine tune it.
The thing that scares you is that the 107 is already being released so will they spend the time to still work out the issues on the 106 ?
I like my 811s cause with the latest firmware I can burn that media Memorex 4x + ricohjpn01 @ 8x and set the bitsetting to DVD-Rom for compatibility. Most Imation 4x + has the same media code from what I've experienced.
Some 4x DVD-R media that works great on my Pioneer (of course it only burns it at 2 x) is the Fujifilm 4x (Taiyo Yuden, look for made in japan, box only, not spindle), and the Ritek G04 @ Newegg for about $1 per disc with free shipping.
I don't know , it's been quite a while for a firmware update came along for the 104 so who knows ?
