I have recently purchased the following products.

    - Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus

    - Forty-TwoDVD-MPPlus

    - Forty-two (shareware version)

I am having difficulty getting them to install and run.

    My system is:

    - PowerMac Quicksilver, Dual 1 gHz, 1 Gig Ram, system OSX 10.2.8

    - I have a licensed version Quicktime Pro, but not the MPEG playback option (I use other decoders for this)

    - BSD subsystem is installed

I have downloaded from the vendor's web site both the full versions and the updates required for them.

When installing forty-two (shareware version) I have exactly followed the installation instructions being certain that no spaces existed in the installation directory path (files in the Root/Library/Application Support folder, Application in the root/application folder).

The one odd item is: when binding the unix files I see a box stating “authentication required”. What is this? At any rate, the dialaogue box states the files are bound. Forty two refuses to run correctly. It sees the DVD, analyzes it, and then stalls at the encoding stage showing no time remaining set at 0 with no further action (left it for 24 hours).

However, not to be deterred, and encouraged by the help forums, I purchased the other products.

When I installed the Forty-twoDVD MPPlus, (using the same process as above) It refuses to accept the supplied registration number.

I seem to be doing something wrong with this product. Re-installs present the same issues.

I have emailed the software supplier, no answer so far. They will have to resolve the registration issue. Right now, I would just like to get 42 going.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you done a search yet on this topic?
This has bean an issue for a long time with first time users. You must read the instructions completly.
When you are asked for an "autentication" password , put in your Login password for your mac.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your reply. I have monitored and searched the forums for a week regarding this topic. The answers summarize as:

    1. invalid path due to spaces: checked and correct
    2. downloaded an update and not the full program: checked, downloaded from the developers site and reinstalled
    3. did not have the BSD subsystem installed: installed it myself and verified
    4. did not enter password into authentication (I thought that was what it was): I did this as well

Most posts are variations on the above themes.

I suspect that an improper installation has left pref files or some other item which is preventing a clean and correct reinstall; or, thier is a problem with my quicktime installation.

Any thoughts on doing a "clean install"

Perhaps this post will serve to summarize the issues for other first-time users.

    Thanks, Barktech

It sounds like you didn't install the support binaries properly if you never authenticated the installer. This installer can be found in the original 42 full download file. I can never figure why so many have issues with this app. I've used it since beta and it's all-ways worked for me. RTM again to make sure you ran everything correctly.

Thanks so much for your reply. You raise a good point regarding the mistakes people seem to make. The software providers need to be more explicit in their documentation.

For instance: the shareware application uses a folder called forty-two to be placed in the library. So do the other "for sale" apps (mppg and Divx). The tendency is to re-install the 42 folder overwriting the previously folders. It turns out they all contain some similar and some different files. Overwriting will cause no end of problems. I finally figured this out and manually placed all the files into the forty-two folder.

The issue of "authentication" is only an issue because the window is different than the one normally seen when installing software - was it re-written for this app? At any rate, newbie beware; it is simply asking for permission to write to the root directory and not some arcane password that the vendor did not supply.

The other issue is one of upgrades. You must install the base app (with the above caveat). The registration and name should not be entered into these apps (they won't work). Install the updates over the base software and, using the "name" and registration provided with the email, enter it and it will work. Again, newbie beware, no other "name" or "serial number" except that provided in the email will work.

So all is now well, but one has to admit, that a PDF or web page stating the all the issues, or a "how to" on this forum, would decrease the newbie requests.

I am very disappointed at the response from the authors toward support of a "sold" product. After 2 emails to them and one week waiting time, I have no response. I like to support authors of shareware, that is why I pay my money(or donation) when requested. I do expect them to honor their side of the commitment and provide a modicum of support. This type of example is bad for all future developers.

    Thanks, Barktech
