  1. Hey all, i'd like to know what's the real advantage of updating the NEC 1300a firmware (v1.07) to a newer one.

  2. try this link to find latest firmware(s) for your burner:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Download the appropriate firmware upgrade(s) - might be several newer ones available - usually come in a zip file - unzip and read details in readme.txt file.. that should tell you what you are looking for.

One caution - once burner is flashed with firmware upgrade, there is usually no going back. Keep brain in gear.. good luck.

    Advantages?
May allow (only maybe) you to use cheaper discs that otherwise did not previously work with the NEC. You will have to trust eye witness accounts provided here and there on various posts. e.g. leaddata (can't recall the name and code exactly) discs did not work well with the NEC firmware version 1.05 (my old) but apparently do with the later firmware updates. I personally have not switched discs since my last upgrade.

Unofficial patches like Herrie's 1.08v2 (I won't go further it's been discussed a lot) will allow you to do book type bitsetting. This is only usefull if your standalone DVD player won't play DVD+R or DVD+RW unless you set the book type to DVD-ROM. You need to test this yourself before deciding.

Read any patch information on the NEC site (or other like Herrie's) to assess the benefits of the updates youself and then decide if you need it.

Best advice is that if you don't have a real reason to change your firmware then don't do it. Only when the patch contains something you can't do without should you consider updating the firmware.

I updated mine from 1.06 to 1.09 and was able to use more types of media (before I was having problems using memorex/maxell dvd-r's, now they burn like a charm).

And as far as I know, you can flash back to any firmware at any time.
