Click the link below and tell me what you guys think of the new AMD 1.5Ghz Compaq system. I went today and looked at it. Worth the money? I am thinking about this system if I could ever get my credit cards paid off, which looks like a reality in the coming month or so. Just wanted some opinions. It was also in the Sunday Ad this week.

Don't get a Compaq. go to http://www.pricewatch.com and click on windows systems.

please don't buy a compaq! that or a hewlett packard is hardly the ideal choice for an athlon-powered system!

145 views and only two responses. I figured there would be tons of people suggesting to or not to buy such a system. Any suggestions OTHER than pricewatch? I get sick of going to sites and "building my own" on the website and having to put up with the sucky choices. Most of the places on pricewatch have sucky choices. Maybe I am too picky. I would build my own, but really don't have the self-assurance for such a project. Oh well...I basically wanted some input to start with and go from there. It will be a while until I buy anything anyway so thanks.

If you want the best you can buy go to http://www.alienware.com. I got my computer from http://www.tigerdirect.com. It's a Tiger/Systemax, it's made from decent quality parts except the video card(16mb). but I fixed that by buying a new one and putting it in. Most of their pc's dont come with monitors, but you can just use the one you have now.

You might check http://www.nextechinc.com/
They seem to offer good prices and have good ratings at

Normally I haven't liked the compaqs I have dealt with. Mainly because they are loaded with un-needed software that slows down the system. Also because they are very difficult to upgrade inside either because the case is too small or because their are no expansion slots available.
This system however doesn't seem like it would be a bad deal. It would be a very quick system for sure. Big harddrive, good video card, plenty of ram, fast burner and DVD-ROM. It says it has firewire support which might be useful too. It also says it has 3 open expansion slots and the case in the picture appears to be full Mid-Tower which is good. It doesn't mention the power supply but hopefull it is at least 300W. It doesn't come with a monitor so that would be extra or maybe you would use your current one.
YOu could build a comparible PC for around $1000 dollars. The one thing that is nice with bundles is the software, that would be a big add-on if your were building your own.
Dell and Gateway's prices are a few hundred dollars more than that Compaqs for a similar PC, only with a Intel chip and not AMD. Thats with a monitor included too. However, the P4 come with RDram which would most likely be more expensive to upgrade concerning the ram. DDR ram is almost cheaper than SDram which is already very cheap.
All in all if your not looking to build your own pc that Compaq wouldn't be a bad deal. In a month or two the prices will probly come down even lower too!

Only made system I would even try would be a Dell and now you can get a 1 gig for $999. Just remember if you buy Dell, Compac or HP you may be stuck either buying their own parts for upgrades or can't upgrade at all, know I guy who just bought a Sony VAIO system and it only has a Built in 16 meg video card and his motherboard has NO AGP port. So if you ever plan to upgrade better know whats inside 1st.

I always build my own systems. The only problem is getting software... lucky that we have CDRW drives and warez sites though.
