I have a copy of Windows XP Home that I bought as an upgrade pack to Windows ME. I'll be building a new PC within the next few days, and I want to know if I can take it with me. I heard somewhere that it will refuse to activate, obviously thinking it had been copied and distributed. This is a pain for me, because it cost me £80 and I don't feel like losing it!
Will it allow me to upgrade, or do I have to go and buy a new copy of Windows?
Thanks very much in advance!

Cobra,
You can install it as many time as you like but "ONLY" on one machine at a time.
Having said that, past the first time, you may have to make a phone call and get M$ to issue you an installation number.
I own Win XP Pro and I first installed it on an old PII laptop just to see what would happen. It ran slower than hell but it did work. I removed if from the laptop and installed it in my desktop unit. This installation made me call a M$ 800 number and get a new installation code. Of course I had to tell them what I was doing but.....
Then after about 1 month, HDD failure and had to reinstall again. And again the same story with the phone call and explanation. Aside from the phone calls everything works / worked as advertised.
Ed.
