I eventually got the drive working (had to clean lens, switch from Nero to Clone to Gear Pro, burnt many coasters in meantime), but even if I just burn a few MB as a test it writes the data in <60 seconds but then takes OVER 10 mins to write the lead out?
This happens in Nero express (only works at 1x), and also in Gear (lets me use 2x). Has this happened to anyone else, am I doing something wrong, I'm new to this but am assuming this isn't normal??
(btw I just finished my first VHS -> DVD transfer using the guides on here and the result is nearly flawless. very impressed especially considering its going through a lowly Wintv Go card then through TMPGENC.)

This is a normal effect as a DVD-track has to have a certain minimum length. Therefore if the amount of data your have to write is too small the lead out is lengthend to fulfill the minimum track length requirment.

I know Nero has a "compatibility mode" for UDF DVDs. This usually means write at least 1 GB, because some players or the XBox have problems reading it otherwise.
Try disabling that (in the UDF tab of the compilation's properties?). -
thanks schmendrick, I don't mind the time it takes I'm just relieved its not a drive error.
thx Ztank but I've ditched Nero for now, if I go above 1x it gives me a power cal error so I'm sticking with gear pro 8) -
yeah I know its old I bought it cheap while I'm saving for a stand-alone recorder, its 2x but I've only found gear pro to handle that so far.

@ andydd: No! The A03 is able to burn @ 2x-speed. The problem is that at the time the A03 was introduced anything beyond 1x-speed at that time was not officially reckognized by the DVD-Forum. Therefore if you use an official firmware from Pioneer the A03 only can write 2x-speed on certain media certified for this speed by Pioneer.
IMPORTANT !!!:: If you have not updated your firmware to an appropriate new firmware you can destroy the A03 simply by inserting high-speed media (4x and higher)! It was reported that the destruction already takes place when the drive tries to identify the media! So beware of high-speed media!
After installation of a recent update I have heard rumors ( I don't know for sure) that you are able to record at 2x-speed to any higher speed media, even to 2x-certified DVD-RWs at 2x-Speed. But this you will have to recheck.
