There ARE programs that convert pictures to ASCII. It appears that is how this was done.
Impressive

Very interesting.
I know I tend to have alot of freetime on my hands too, and since I live alone, makes it all the more reason I have excessive time to just sit around and do nothing lol.

There is a program from apples developer site that allows you to watch any quicktime movie in ascii in the terminal.
Very cool, yet completely pointless.
Someone even made it in color.

Wow that looks fantastic, how much time did that person spend to make the Matrix?
Is there a program which would convert pictures to that. -

there are programs that will do the conversion, and display it on a terminal or a web site.
do a search for "deep ascii" and you can find the movie "Deep Throat", streamed to your desktop in ascii. unless you're familiar with the movie, you may not recognize the dirty parts.
my problem is that I can't find any filters or programs that will do it to video. the only way I've found to do it in a video file that you intend to use as a video file and not a web site or terminal vid, is to export each frame as a bitmap, then run each one through a picture-to-ascii convertor, then reassemble them into a video file.
I actually found software that can do the exporting (Virtualdub) and the reassembling (MakeAVI) in batch conversions, fairly quickly, but I haven't been able to find picture-to-ascii software that will do batch conversions. And at 30 pictures for a second of video, time adds up...- housepig
