Load the VOB file into Virtual Dub mod, and follow this guide.

  3. This has worked for me. It requires no reencoding and no loss of quality and is a fairly quick conversion process.

De-Multiplex the VOB file with TMPGenc, then Multiplex the video stream and your selected audio stream into a MPEG2 file.

The commands would be "File" "MPEG TOOLS" "DeMultiplex" "Browse" "Type of File=*.*", select your vob file (will not work from DVD), then double click video and audio streams and save them to HDD folder. Multiplex is pretty much that routine in reverse. It's easy man..... Just rip the DVD to HDD first with DVD Decrypter or Smartripper.

    Good luck.

Try VobEdit or Vobrator as both should be able to demultiplex the VOB file(s) into seperate M2V video and AC-3 (or whatever it is) audio

Although it depends on exactly what you are trying to do in the end.

For instance if you want to re-encode then I would run it through DVD2AVI version 1.76 and create a D2V project file and this will also demux your audio streams.

If you don't want to re-encode and just want to demultiplex then use VobEdit or Vobrator.

    Hi kano,

I might be missing something here, but why don't you use something like Nero 6 (or any one of the other good burners people will / can recommend) to burn the VOB files to a DVD disc. Use the "DVD Video" option.

Stand-alone DVD players play VOB files, so I don't see that you'd need to do VOB -> MPG2.

  8. Nero 5.5 for some reason won't let me choose my dvd burner as a destination drive. I clicked on the scroll down and my dvd burner wasn't even there. My dvd burner works fine with the software that it came with.
however, the software that came with my dvd burner won't import vob files for some reason. I just want to watch my computer movies on my stand alone dvd player

You then have something wrong with that vob file. Re-rip the vob or try repair steps. This method works on vob files. Read the help file or a guide.

    Good luck dude.

    From another post:
    Update:

I delete my loly vob file and ripped it again off the original disk. This time around TMPGenc Plus (using MPEG TOOLS again) let me De-Multiplex the vob (*.*) and produced the m2v and ac3 files like it was supposed to. I suppose my vob file was damaged. I reencoded the ac3 to mp2 with HeadAC3he v0.23a, then Multiplex to MPEG2 Program VBR. Pretty easy this time(?)

Thanks for the help everyone. I've got it going now I think.

  10. Okay I opened tmpgenc, went to file, mpg tools, demulitplex, browse, and choose my file. I got it to open this time, theres a catch though. I have 7 vob files, different chapters of the movie. The first one demultiplexes fine, when i try to to the second one it doesn't save the file as an m2v. It doesn't give it an extension at all. so i gave it an m2v file extension, but when I go to import the file to do a multiplex it wont open. The first one opens fine when I try to do a multiplex. the first vob gets a m2v extension when I demultiplex it but the second vob gets no extension and wont import so i can multiplex it with the audio. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Kano,

If you've already got VOB files, all you need do is find some way of burning them (and the associated IFO & BUP files) to a DVD disc so you can watch them on your stand-alone.

If they're ripped from a DVD9, then you might need something like DVDShrink to get 'em on to one DVD of 4.7Gb.

Make sure that all the IFO, BUP and VOB files go into the VIDEO_TS (must be in caps) folder. I'd recommend also burning the (probably empty) AUDIO_TS folder too as some players don't recognise a DVD unless that's there (even though it's usually empty).

I believe that Nero 5.5 isn't too well configured for DVD burning. Either upgrade to 6 (it's only $50 new), or check out the Tools for other burners (or search the forum for people's favourites / recommendations).

DVDDecrypter (freeware) might be worth a look as it decrypts DVD's as well as burning - I presume you're doing backups?. I've seen it mentioned many times as a good choice.

Another I've seen mentioned as a preference is RecordNow Max - that's only $50 too.

Get a re-writeable to do test burns and make sure it's OK in your stand-alone as well as your PC.

  12. I had no Idea that DVD decrypter had burning applications. Thats the software I use for ripping. Anyway, I will look into it and let you know. Still it would be nice to be able to turn all those nasty vob files into one big mpeg-2 file. I would have uses for an mpeg-2 file on my computer. If anyone could offer some more advice as to what i'm doing wrong on tmpeg, it would be greatly appreciated. I will try dvd-dycrptyer for my stand alone dvd player.
