You will be safe buying one now because its still going to be a while before dual layer dvd burners are released, anyway when they do come out I am sure they will be very expensive. You can buy a dual format dvd burner for about $100 right now.

Caps means shouting in a forum !!!
Not very nice when asking questions!!

Its a fat chance your are going to be able to get a double layer burner for a mere $120 that single layer burners cost these days!!!
Also what about media prices?? Wont they be expensive too??

Mind ya if ya got the cash then there is no point arguing about it!!!

IMHO paying less than $1 for 4.7GB media is extra cool especially now that i can pick up a spanking new +/-R burner for a $100, even if i have to spend 1.5 hr to compress a bit my original DVDs to fit the 4.7GB media!!!

The double layer burner/media can wait for a few more months!!!!(or a yr)

I am still trying to get over how much $$$$ i spent on my A-03 couple yrs ago!!!!

IS IT WORTH BUYING A DVD BURNER TODAY?

YES if you're on the EAST COAST and you locate a SNOW SALE!

Then when dual capacities come out..say goodbye to $500.00 at first
    not $150.00

  8. THE LG 4040B COST IN MY COUNTRY 280 $ AND THE A06 GOES AROUND THE SAME PRICE

  9. If you really need a DVD writer then buy it now because,as with all electronics, there will always be another drive that's faster, better and cheaper.

  10. Get the BenQ DW800A 8x DVD+RW burner. This burner may be able to burn dual layer DVD+R discs via a firmware update.

You could bay the DVD now, although the USB and firewire enclosures for the external drives are awesome also if you move your burner from one computer to another and don't want to install in a bay.

My advice is to get the Pioneer A-06 as well!!
I've had the A-03, A-04 and A05 with no probs whatsoever over the years(even with hacked firmware!!! )
Just very few coasters mainly due to user errors!!

$280 for the A-06 in yr country??? wow!

I imagine if/when the double layer recorders come out in yr country they 're gonna be expensive as hell!!!!

    Good luck!

    That's BS

I possess one of these DVD burners and it is excellent, also it is primarily
a DVD burner , use your old CD burner, they are worth nothing!

If you have an uptodate fast machine with a fast hard drive, get the LG, you
cannot expect good results with a four year old computer.

  19. I also have the LG and it works very well for me. No CD burning problems at all even at 24 X.

It doesnt like memorex RAM disks nope not at all.

  20. There is always someone who just seems to know everything. However, unless you actually own 10 different burners, it is better to listen to someone who actually has a burner you are looking at. I have a LG4020 DVD burner and also have several other CDRW LG drives, a 8X write LG, a 12X write LG, and a 32X write LG. I have never been disappointed in any of my LG drives. They are far below the cost of many others and always match up in the upper end past the middle of the road pack. I have burned a least 75 DVD movie backups with my LG4020B, all flawlessley. I have used both generic and name brand DVD blanks, TDK I like because they are inexpensive and work well. Usually, when someone has a burning problem it is because they aren't burning correctly or always burn at maximum speed, a real mistake. In my experience using DVDDecrypt to read and decode my movie DVD, using DVD Shrink 3 to encode to DVD and compress to fit on a 4.7 gig disk (done automatically by the way) works just great. I take my time and use deep analysis in DVD Shrink for all movies and you would be hard pressed to see any quality difference between the original, even with the entire DVD including all special features being compressed to fit on one 4.7 gig DVD. IMHO, LG makes very good affordable CD and DVDburners at a great price.

  21. Asking if it is worth buying a DVD burner these days is like asking if u should upgrade ur graphics card or add more memory to ur system.
It all despends on ur needs because there will always be newer, faster and better hardware in a few months time.
If u need a dvd burner then why waiting to get one when they are affordable?.
As soon as dual layer burners hit the shelves, a new piece of hardware or standard will be on the horizon. Then I ask, will it be worth buying a dual layer burner those days?

    Go with ur needs pal.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks

Have you noticed that a slight tax increase costs you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?

    Yes it's worth it.

In the UK you can now get dual format burners for less than £100 - I bought a new DVD-Rom/CDR combo for £70 a couple of weeks ago. So with DVD burners that cheap relative to other optical drives there's no reason not to buy one - 9Gb burners won't be affordable for a couple of years yet.
    Regards,

    Rob

    hi jack_,

I got mine for $149 in a local computer store. OptoRite #DD0201 series.

It also has HD-Burn, but I'm BUGGed to know what that is or benefit it has
    for me

Yeah, I would get a burner soon as you can, cause you need to keep up w/
the pase of things - you know ??
Actualy my first was by CinDyne for $259 I think, but I never used it (still
in the box) cause it said no '98 support. Anyways, I'm happy I got my
OptoRite, though its not ben easy w/ Memorex brand DVD+RW 4x disks.
These seem to have to be formatted, but the format fails - IOW, they are
useless. Wish someone had told me this before I bought those disks
Damn, I really wanted to burn LOTS of test disks w/ RW disks

Anyways, do get one though, cause you want to keep up w/ the times of
things - don't be left behind.

    No. Not at all.

    - Look at the user's name.
    - Look at his past questions.
    - Look at his grammer, punctuation and spelling.

It's like talking to a elementary school student.
    Again, no, not at all.

O.K. But, maybe English is not his first language and / or he's inexperience, or young, when it comes to computers.

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. That really gets me in trouble with my wife as she considers me a soft-touch concerning our three year old son.

A few years ago, when I bought my 1st cd burner I wasn't on the trailing edge of technology but neither was I a leader. The cost of my 6x cd burner was $290 canadian. Just a month before a 4x by the same manufacturer was selling for $325-$350 canadian but I got a good deal and the last in the city at that price before Christmas.

This year I bought a dual format DVD writer for $200 canadian after store and mail-in rebates. That was great at the time because it was before all the price drops. Today that's still a current price (or more) for the same burner. I got a great deal on DVD+RW and a bulk pack DVD-R.

When I count the cost per byte of storage I am ahead by having purchased my DVD writer now. When I count the convenience of less discs needed to store my data and the ability to backup perfect duplicates of my DVDs on 2 discs or make single compressed working copies of my discs then it's really worth it.

I made a decision part way through my use of CDs to use more rewritable discs and the ratio of DVD+-R to DVD-+RW is about 50/50 now with my DVD discs. Future purchases will likely be DVD+-RW depending on the best price available. At some point in the future when I move to new technology there will always be someone on the trailing edge who will want my discs. I will transfer my data/video to the new discs, erase the discs and sell the old for about the same price as I paid. At the price I paid, I already have offers for my CDRW that equal and even surpass my cost. I always shopped that sales so got good prices on my RW media.

If you can afford it now then go for it, especially if you are spending a lot of time making VCD and svcd. I'm not knocking it but for me with the deals I got, the cost had reached the break even point and it was time to switch.

  30. I just read this from the CNN Technology page:

    Sony Double-Layer DVD
Sound bite: Hot off the presses, the first of the double-layer DVD drives and discs will ship this quarter. Sony, historically a flagship in digital media storage, will be doing a first-look demo.

Real-world business app: With nearly twice the capacity of standard discs, or about 8.5GB each, double-layer DVDs will no doubt be instantly christened the non plus ultra of digital storage for entertainment-media types. www.sony.com
    ************************************************** *

I wonder how much this drive and the media is going to cost. This will make it much easier to back up a dual layer DVD and eliminate the need to transcode the video.
