  1. Hi,

I am wondering about all this stuff with aspect radios. I've got my Small Soldiers DVD here and want to copy it to 2x XVCDs. The picture is good and sound is good when I use DVD2AVI and TMPGenc to make the MPEG-1 (352x240 4:3 Output Aspect Radio).

Now, since this movie is 16:9 (DVD 720x480) I am wondering if I can put the Output Settings in TMPGenc also to 16:9 720x480 at a bitrate of 2000 without increasing the amount of CDs necessary and to make a XVCD which will run fine on a 16:9 TV (also 4:3 which can emulate 16:9, with black bars of course)? Or can I even use the standard 352x240 but set the output aspect radio to 16:9?

    Thanks in advance!!

MPEG resolution does not effect the aspect ratio. But if you select 16:9 as output aspect ratio, probably you can not play it on a 4:3 TV properly, it might look stretched vertically.

  3. Yeah, but the movie is in 16:9 after all, can't I use 16:9 as output too, or does that brake a "standard"?

So if I increase resolution to 720x480 it will still be 4:3 aspect radio but the picture most look better, or?

    Thanks again!

  4. A VCD image will always be displayed as a 4:3 image on the TV, even if the image does not have 4:3 proportions.

    |---| |---|
    | | = | | 4:3
    | | |---|
    |---|

If you are going to squeeze the image on your TV to 16:9 you have to crop off any black bars in TMPEG and make sure the image fills the screen. Then you can manually squeeze it on your TV and get a much better picture. Of course you'll have the problem that the TV doesn't switch mode on it's own, but I find it's not that big of an operation.

  6. Hmm, I try now to use the Video Aspect Ratio: 16:9 NTSC with a resolution of 480x480. Is there any chance that the DVD player will detect this as a Widescreen XVCD? The preview window does not have any black bars now, but who knows. Maybe the XVCD will behave stupid in my DVD player (Pioneer 343). The reason why I want this to work is that I have a 4:3 TV in my bedroom, but a 16:9 in my living room and I should be able to watch my XVCDs on both TVs (on both I can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 mode).

If you want to play it on a 4:3 TV as well, output aspect ratio must be 4:3.
Anyway, don't talk so much, take a short clip, have some tests and burn it onto a CD-RW.
