    I have a
    G4 400 mhz Mac 120 gig HD running OSX.2.8.
    Just installed a
Pioneer DVR-106 latest firmware 1.07 is checking out.
    System Profiler shows
Disk Burning as being fully supported.

    DVD player shows my movies
    Can't find iDVD.

I wanna put my xmas videos to DVD and have em play on standard players.

From the forum posts I've seen so far I'm thinking I'm iSOL on getting iDVD going.

    What are my alternatives?
Pro Solutions w/pro price tags are not an alternative.
Santa got all my bucks (again) this year.

    Thanx in advance guys.

    What Galactica said!

If your machine did not come with an Apple "SuperDrive" factory-installed, you would/will have to buy the $49.95 (?) "iLife" package from Apple to get iDVD. The other "iApps" are freely downloadable, but the MPEG2 licencing-costs (supposedly) are what makes Apple charge for iDVD.

    Stop the car...SCREEEECH!!!

Just went to the Apple site and checked the knowledge base and looked at iLife compatibilty.

    Says factory installed superdrive required.
    ...it turns out that ...
Yes. I can create an iDVD project.
But, burning it requires putting it on a Mac with a factory installed superdrive

Can't a brother just burn a freaking DVD... send it to friends and say...Burned on a Mac?
Looky at why Mac is so great!
I does just what you think it is gonna do.

I just want to burn a DVD...

    Same here.

I have a G4 Dual 450, which did not come with a Superdrive. I removed the "stock" DVD/CD-rom player, and installed a Sony U10A DVD/CD-R/RW drive - and it works like a charm.

The "catch" with iDVD is that the drive has to be connected to the same internal drive-connector the "stock" drive uses. iDVD does not support burning to external drives, or drives in the lower of the two drive-bays (on later Macs).

Anyway, yours and mine only had room for a Zip drive in the lower bay -sure dates 'em, doesn't it??

Yes it does...I still get "oooo" comments from PeeCee folks about how quick and responsive my machine is.

I get this DVD thing happening and I will be put into godlike status ...
    Thanx for the input man.

If you are going the iDVD route, which will require replacing your existing drive with the DVD-burner - you may want to take a look at this link:
    http://www.burninghelix.com/?section=dvr105install

It has pictures of the little details involved in swapping drives. It shows a Pioneer drive, but it was the same for my Sony drive (they're all about the same form-factor).

When I did the swap on my G4 450, I used a similar picture-filled walk-through in an issue of MacAddict - which was full of Upgrade articles (I'd saved the issue, knowing I would eventually get a burner).

    Good Luck!

EDIT: Silly me, your first post says you already installed the drive. My bad... :P

    No harm no foul.
I went the banzai route and installed it sans instructions...went wayy to far and took the whole case apart (in case you ever need to know...little screws in the handles...long screws in the side molding).

Everythings copacetic ... just gotta bide my time til payday and pick up iLife.

Next step ... learn a whole new language ... 'video'

    BTW
Been all over looking at reviews for Toast 6 Titanium (or as I like to call it ...Plan B)...everyone just raves.
