I have backed up dozens of DVD's to my hard drive using DVD Shrink.
It's usually the only program I use. Recently I've read a couple of posts
that say to avoid DVD Shrink for doing the ripping because it causes
extra wear and tear to the hard drive. But I haven't seen any references
quoted other than "they say".
Are there any studies that anyone can point out to me that show that
one should use something like DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD first and
then use DVD Shrink to compress?

Do you mean DVD Rom or hardrive.
I prefer ripping the DVD with DVD Decrypter first.
DVDShrink has to read the DVD 3x.
1. Initial Analysis
2. Deep analysis
3. Read while encoding.
I rip the DVD with dvd Decrypter.. read it once and put it away. -
I've been using DVDShrink for 6 months and haven't had any hardware problems yet.I use DVDDecrypter if DVDShrink can't rip...which is very rare.

Ugh, do people read what they post? Shrink doesn't read the whole disk 3 times. It scans for initial analysis. It does read the whole thing if you do deep analysis. It does read the whole disk for backup.
Ripping from DVDDecryptor first doesn't save you anything when doing shrink. You've dropped the rip step but you did it with dvddecryptor. If you need deep analysis you still do it with Shrink and of course the initial analysis(which you can drop).
To set the record straight. Using Shrink doesn't wear your harddrive out. Come on people, let's use a little PC savvy hear (apologies to the MAC users). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Gazorgan,
Read what I posted. I just stated that I prefer reading my DVD once putting it away. I backup so I can save my originals so the less time spent reading in my DVD Rom the better. -

This goes to show u how important it is to read as many posts as possble, so you can see who is a good source of info, and who is not. -
I would point out that any nonlinear file access ( lots of random seeking )
on a DVD Rom will take longer and cause more wear than
if done on a magnetic hard disk.
However , even a complicated Shrink operation ( getting lotsa little
pieces of the DVD ) probably doesn't make it worth the trouble.
Having said that , I always rip the whole thing to hard disk before
using shrink , because I like to screw around with it , and it's faster
on the hard disk.
