I wanted to warn potential buyers of the Philips DVDR-77 recorder that it does
not have fast-forward or rewind capability. I know that this seems odd, kinda like
a car that comes without wheels. I hope you do not get stuck with this recorder like I did. Yes, I even confirmed with Philips that the unit cannot do FF/REW.
    Argh!

  2. Hi,

This seems odd, i've got a philips dvdr890 and there is no fast forward or reverse buttons on the remote.

But if you you press and hold the Next chapter/title or Previous chapter/title selection buttons for a few seconds they become fast forward or rewind buttons.

the newer recorders might be the same

  3. Are you shure ???

    From manual

    http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvdr77_17/dvdr77_17_dfu_aen.pdf

    |<< Previous Chapter Track/Reverse search:
Pressing this button once during playback will return to the previous
    chapter track/ title
If this button is held down during playback, it will search forward.
If this button is held down during a still picture, it will search backward
    in slow motion.

    >>| Next title/Chapter/Track/Forward search:
Pressing this button once during playback will jump to the next
    chapter/track.
If this button is held down during playback, it will search forward.
If button is held down during a still picture function, it will search
    forward in slow motion.

The printed manual that I have refers to this method as "scan", which was a "play 10 seconds from the start of each chapter" functionality on previous philips DVD recorders I have used. So now they are using that name to refer to different functionalities.

It is also possible to execute fast-forward and rewind thru a menu key sequence. But my point is that this is a very basic function, which should have a dedicated key on the remote. How is the babysitter supposed to know that to fast-forward you have to press-and-hold the chapter-skip key? It is definately not intuitive.

Luckily, the unit does respond to fast-forward and rewind IR codes from the 985 recorders remote that I borrowed. I copied those codes to my MX500 Universal Learning Remote. That copying of codes kept me from drop kicking this recorder out of my window.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I understand your concern and I agree with you that it should have separate buttons, but you are over-reacting. Judging DVD Recorder quality based on some two stupid missing buttons on remote ???

BTW: Scan is still scan. Search is not Scan.
