  1. mom got this gateway comptuer for the family for xmas

    3.06 ghz P4 w/ HyperThreading
    120 GB 7200 RPM HDD
    512 mb DDR RAM

i was just wondering how long would a 2 hr movie take to encode on that?
i usually encode on this P3 1 ghz machine but im wondering if it is going to be worth the trouble to start encoding on that

right now im encoding a 60 minute history channel dvd and its going to take about 6 hrs and 30 minutes. about how long will the gateway take to do the same movie

    thx

    Encoding using what??
I'm using a P4 HT 2.6 and I can encode using CCE at 1.8 times
so I don't think that trouble will be the right words - more like a joy compared to your current encoding speed

If you are using Tmpgenc don't use the highest quality settings. It will take forever and you will not see any difference in the results. The default settings should work just fine and allow you to convert in .5 to 1x time.

There is no set in stone answer to that. You could have a 3.06 HT machine and I could have a 2.4 P4 800 Mhz and encode faster.

    How ?

There are other variables in there.

    1) What is running at the time of the encoding. Not just the active programs but the ones behind the scenes. For a sample of what I mean, see here:
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

    2) What drives does it have ? 1 ? 2 ? If you are using 1 drive, it will be painfully slow. Not only must it read the cache from your C: drive but it needs to read the source and write the output, all to the same drive. I have seperate drives, none of them C: for input and output.

    3) settings in TMPGenc

Suffice to say, you have a fast machine but check these things out otherwise it will be like having a drag racer with a trailer attached...
