which os is better for my new laptop.
i plan to encode via firwire, burn vcds, surf the internet, instant message, file share and run dos-vesa games that very very old. they require protected mode.
i was thinking of going with windows me. their's no real price difference. their pushing xp but dell will give a choice.

If you want to run DOS games then don't get ME, get win98 SE. But I would really suggest XP as it's win2000 core and that is solid. It will also mean that you can encode more than 19 mins of digital video via firewire

make sure it is up to XPs requirments, ie. 256Mb RAM etc. (it really says just 128Mb, but 256Mb will be much better as XP is a heavy resource user)
Win ME is basically Win98 TE (Third Edition), Which is basically an altered Win95.
XP Vs ME is basically a no contest: XP is far far superior, ME is just too unstable compared to it.
Its the year 2001, you dont want to be using software that is mainly from pre-1995 do you?

maybe i should upgrade from windows 3.0.. i have been waiting for version 4.0, but it seems like they're not coming out with it..
is my system fast enough for millenium xp windows?
intel 486 sx33 (not the dx with the math co-processor)
4mb of ram
250mb harddrive
256k onboard video card
no sound card
2400 baud modem
14 inch monitor
mouse & keyboard
i'm thinking about upgrading my system.
i can get a pentium 83mhz OVERDRIVE processor is only $300
i can get 8mb more ram for $80, but i'll have to get 2 8mb simm's because you have to have 2 matching modules for the pentium.
a 1 gigabyte western digital harddrive for $159
a soundblaster pro value 16 for $40
y'think thats a good idea, should i?

jeex, ur computer is mid-evil.
their's no way that thing will even run windows 95.
forget upgrading, how about replacing.

I think that post was a joke
Look at the upgrade prices for example. I the used comptuer store I visit had a 10pack of 486dx33 CPUs for $25! That was my first (real) computer in 1990/1 and I paid ~$1600 for the whole system.

Windows ME isn't evil, and it is not as unstable as people say it is. I have a machine with win me and it works fine. Either os will work fine for your computer. take a look at what programs you want to use and see if they can run in the xp environment. The only real advantage I can see for xp is no 4gb limit, however that doesn't apply to all versions of xp.
One thing about xp, it requires more power for equal performace. -
@ jeex
Welcome to the 21st century, glad you got the time machine working! I hope you're not disapointed at the lack of silver clothes and flying cars (I was). With modern technology you don't have to wait 2 hours for your PC to boot (unless you're using ME (lol)), I just traded my Atari ST in for a penny whistle, but I had to beg the guy!!! -
doesn't windows me support that ntfs file system.
how much is windows 98 se. -
Windows me does not support the ntfs file system. I've seen windows 98se for about $89
