I was wondering, is silkscreening a DVD a new process? What does it do?

No, it's a very old process. It's how they print the labels on some discs. A sheet of "silk", or porous fabric is stretched on a frame, and an image outlined on the silk. Where you do not want the ink to print, you block up the holes between the fibres of the material. When ink is squeezed through the fabric (with a window squeegee), it sticks to the disc surface. Where the fabric is blocked remains unprinted.

Andy Warhol used the technique in the 1960s to print his famous "Monroe" prints.

So the labels are smooth? Do all official DVDs have this?
