    Hello all,

This is my first post here.

Basically, I recently purchased a Pioneer 106D (Firmware 1.07) 4x speed DVD recorder (OEM).

Now, I have a P3 700, 256MB Ram, Win 98 SE OS a 20 GB, 12 GB and an old 4 GB batch of Hard drives.

I have tried both DVD Encryptor and Nero 6 for burning both a DVD image (ripped in InstantCopy) and a normal data backup.

DVD Encryptor shows a speed of 2.1x even when 4x is selected manually. Nero also takes about 26 mins to burn a 4.3 gig compilation.

I searched for a similar problem on these boards, and seen a topic. I looked in my BIOS for the UDMA stuff and noticed they were all set to auto.

In device manager I have also tried auto detect and also use both IDE cables. But no luck in getting the full 4x speed burn rate. And it's really starting to do my head in now.

I get some error when booting up about "Controller 80 not connected" (or something similar, I'm at work right now) and that appears twice. A normal CDRW recorder burns at full speed no probs.

Anybody have any suggestions, as my mate has the exact same burner, exact same media (orange bulkpac 4x DVD-R) and gets the full 4x. My burner is also the only drive connected (is on the master setting).

    Any advice???

    Thanks in Advance,

    Andrew Mills

  2. Even though you're friend has the same stuff, I'll bet it's the media.

Install DVDInfoPro and look what the driver thinks the DVD is (Click the Media button).

You'll be able to see if the burner thinks it is a 2x disc or a 4x.

You could try with another disc, another brand, or evt. one of your friend's discs.

(Just though of something: Defragment your hdds, it might help!)

What's wrong with calling Pioneer tech support? Don't you think that this is a better option rather then posting here?

Well seeing that this site is about DVDR help and seeing that most guys here seem to be clued up and friendly, then what's wrong with asking more knowledgable users?

(Tech support staff don't always use the products they support, I should know, as I'm a tech support agent for a company myself...)
