I see no clear winner. If you could give me more memory per disk, then let's talk. I do not burn so much that I cannot just start to burn and go to bed.

Really none. I see no real advantage to burning media at 8x. It's not like I am mass producing DVD's. My Sony Dru500ul is just fine.... 28 minutes to burn a DVD at 2x is ok by me.

Neither.. they are expecting dual layer burners by April 2004. Why waste money on an already dead technology.

14 minutes per burn is pretty good, and RITEK G04's are under $1.00 US in bulk with free shipping.
Now 8x RITEK's are running $1.60 in bulk. That's 60 cents a disk to save 6 minutes. I'm not burning 100's of DVD's a month, nor do I have to get Netflix back in the mail the same day.
I simply don't feel the need to go 8x at this time. That's ignoring dual-layer disks completely (who knows what the cost of dual layer disks will be, but I bet you it will be over $2.00 US in bulk minimum). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -

desire the bragging rights of having the bleeding edge, however,
will find themselves more and more the de facto testers of what really should be beta products.
This is why I waited (and waited..) for the Pioneer A06. No problems,
no coasters and it will write to 8x +R media too -
Dual layer is all very well BUt Sony is ALREADY shipping a next gen recorder (27gb) and Another Mfr will introduce theirs next 04 q1 .. ALtho they are a few thousand dollars each..and the media ?? I think I'll keep waiting till the time is right.. catch the trailing edge AFter all the bugs have been worked out

I have the NEC ND-1300A and I am very happy with 4x writing speed. In fact I still sometimes buy 2x DVD-R discs as well as 4x DVD-R discs. Anything faster than 4x is not worth a huge investment right now.
I'm more interested in dual layer burners although I admit that I doubt I will buy the first gen models. I'll be waiting for 2 reasons:
1.) Price to come down
2.) Work the bugs out
In the meantime I am happy with 4x DVD burning until the dual layer burners come out.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to spend money NOW just to get 8x when you know that dual layer is just around the corner.
The only people I see buying an 8x DVD burner are those who either buy a new system with one installed or those who want to upgrade from 2x to 8x if they haven't already upgraded to 4x. Also anyone wanting to buy a DVD burner in the near future may be "put off" of the expected high price of dual layer burners and get an 8x as their first.
As for most of us here who already have 4x combo drives ... I think we will all wait for dual layer vs 8x now.
It's the only way that makes sense.
