    i am aiming to capture and play an analogue tape on pc with firewire lead and perhaps premiere

    once camcorder is connected and i press play on it, what would i do thereafter?

    Press record from within your capture software might be a good move at this point

    That's what I do with Pinnacle Studio 8.10, well "start capture" anyway.
